Bed Wetting
Question:
My 7 year old TS/ADHD son also wets every night. He wears "pull-ups" to bed and has never had a dry night in his life. He was also leaking urine during the day, which turned out to be dx’d as an "infintile bladder" The dr. prescribed Ditropan, which does wonders for the daytime stuff, but doesn’t effect the nightime problem. My dr. has suggested a potty pager, which clips on their underwear and vibrates the minute it gets wet. The child is then awoken by this vibration and has to be old enough and/or willing to get up, use the bathroom and then reattach the alarm. Dr. said don’t bother trying it unless the child is willing to do this on his own. After several weeks of this, the body gets trained to wake up on its own. Last week my son asked me if we could buy one, so I think we’ll give it a try. By the way, I know a lot of kids who have this problem who do not have TS. Dr.Comings does list it as a characterist of TS, but everything else is on that list too, so its anyones guess it its connected. Anne in OR
Response:
My 8-year-old son with TS wet his bed almost every night till about a year ago, when we used an alarm which sounded as soon as he started wetting. He stopped wetting about 6 weeks after we started the program. However, he started taking Risperdal about a month ago and has been wetting again almost every night. I don’t know if the original bed-wetting was related to the TS and ADD, but his doctor says the new bed-wetting problem is probably from the Risperdal making him sleep deeper.

Dear Anne: I sympathize with your situation. My son was having a problem of having bowel movements in innappropriate places and even though he currently seems to be doing ok with this, it may just start up again at any time. My son has TS and takes Resperidone. Have you ever tried a medication called DVAP which is like a nasal spray for bed wetting? Occasionally my son will awaken from sleep and will announce that he wet the bed, but this has not been as prominent as the encopresis (BM problem). Both are listed in Dr. Comings book under the section that you mentioned. My son is 9 and I know how hard it has been for him, so if you need someone to listen, I’m available. Sincerely, Debbie

From Debbie: My 9 year old son is on the same medication as your son. I would be interested in knowing how your son is doing with this, aside from the current bed wetting problem. My son infrequently wets the bed, but occasionally has an accident, but has a problem of encopresis (bowel movements in his drawers!). Both these problems are mentioned in Dr. Comings book as symptoms. I can’t say the Resperidone has improved his situation, but some changes we made seemed to have helped. While he was off medication the problem really became unbearable. This is the reason we resumed the new medication Resperidone. What is your dosage? My son takes 1 mgm in the a.m. and 1/2 at night along with Artane 1/2 twice daily for any untoward side effects from the Resperidone. Please let me know as I feel very alone on this one. I work for a doctor who didn’t even know it came in a 1 mgm tablet. He had to prescribe this for a little old lady in a nursing home and prescribed 2 mgm and they would break it in half for her each night. It was prescribed by her psychiatrist and we were just renewing her meds. Sincerely, Debbie

– Susan, I am so glad that you did tell Ray. I’m sure that is was a tremendous relief for him to discover that there was a reason for his "movements" and that he isn’t crazy or doesn’t have some terrible thing the matter with him. Now that the two of you have discussed it and gotten it out in the open, perhaps and probably it will be easier for you both to deal with it and to get past it. I also think, in general, it’s not good to have "big secrets" that we keep from our children. Their imaginations often tend to run wild, and what they imagine is always worse than reality. So how are things otherwise? Jackie "face the sun, and the shadows will fall behind you."

Although my son is not on medication, I find he is an unusually heavy sleeper. Maybe that’s the problem more than the TS.

My 8-year old son has TS and has been wetting his bed. Although he is working hard on stopping it, I’m wonding if there’s a nuerological part of this that may be out of his control. Anyone else out there with this problem?

I don’t know if your situation is similar or not, but I remember with us when our then four year old(now 5) was taken off Ritalin(it made her wired-up, not sleeping, and going on major psychotic destructive rampages) she fell into a deep sleep after the drug was stopped, and due to such a deep sleep she started peeing herself at night. Once the drug was cleared out of her system in a couple of days, the problem went away. Perhaps it might be due to medication reactions in your case as well?
