The root of anxiety?

Question:

Hi, I am a GAD sufferer. I had a pretty nasty childhood that’s just packed with horrid experiences and whatnot.  It seems that alot of you out there have been thru the same.   Does this mean that the experiences you experience in childhood play a role in who you become and if you do  or don’t experience panic and/or anxiety?  I dont dwell on memories of the past but I am sure they affect me at a subconscious level. This definitely makes me want to give my future children the best life possibly and certainly never abuse them!

Response:

make sure that they know they’re important to you. let them have some say in matters that concern them so that they will never be afraid to voice their opinions. don’t say anything negative about them to them directly because they WILL believe you. if they have objectionable habits or tendencies such as bed-wetting or dislike of green vegetables, DON’T make an issue of it. treat all of your children the same. if you like one better than another, don’t let it show.

I guess we all are a product of our past, but I don’t think that the past necessarily will determine the likelihood of developing an emotional disorder. There are many who have be raised under appalling conditions but, do not have anxiety. Conversely there are many who have lived unremarkable lives and yet cannot leave their homes. There is also a growing belief amongst psychologists that the influence of adults on children is far less than commonly supposed. Kids it seems are raised at least as much, possibly more, by other kids. Youngsters, even very young ones, tend to develop the attitudes, behaviours and even the fears of their peers, not those of their parents or teachers. So while memories and experiences etc do play a part, this cannot be the only factor. It is known that genetics are also part of the equation and so may be factors such as birth order and even environmental conditions. Ian Phobias:  Dikephobia- Fear of justice.
