Jaw pain and anxiety-depression?

At one point I had to have oral surgery because I broke a piece of my jaw bone (splinter) and it came out the gum line. This was a strong indication that I had to quit taking stelazine. Even though that has been several years ago I still have bad jaw pain. — USA: *Angel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I did see some patients with jaw pain of this kind, but they were on fluoxetine and it was a side effect… Can anxiety and depression cause this type of jaw pain? My main jaw muscles ache on both sides of the jaw. They hurt worse when I lean on them during sleep. They also feel much worse if I bend over and let the blood rush into them. Do you think this is caused by anxiety or depression, or maybe wisdom teeth that have not yet been pulled. Dan I think it is anxiety. I have just recently experienced the jaw soreness and in itself it has caused anxiety in me for the fear that there is something wrong. Now I know that I am not the only one.

TMJ pain may result from dental problems, but also from psychological tension (which could be related to a variety of emotional states, including anxiety, depression, anger, etc.) Some dental interventions help, as well as relaxation and biofeedback therapy. Some people clench their jaws while sleeping. In my clinical practice, I suggest that these people buy or rent a surface EMG biofeedback machine (about $100/month from most suppliers),. Paste the electrodes to the jaw while sleeping, and set the machine to wake you when you start to clench. When this method works, it works very quickly. Information on biofeedback can be obtained from the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, Wheat Ridge, CO, tel Paul Lehrer, PhD Prof of Psychiatry UMDNJ RW Johnson Medical School – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I did see some patients with jaw pain of this kind, but they were on fluoxetine and it was a side effect… Can anxiety and depression cause this type of jaw pain? [posted and emailed] You _could_ be clenching and moving your jaw strangely because you’re under stress. I just had a TMJ injury myself, and my chiropractor fixed me up toot sweet.
I revise. It appears that when my body is getting used t a new dosage of paxil, I clench my jaw, and the afore-mentioned injury was a result of that. (I remember clenching my jaw so hard that I was afraid of breaking teeth!) Thomas A. If you can afford it, I would say first check your problem with a dentist. Pain can be caused by a biochemical disorder in the brain (perhaps related to anxiety or depression); on the other hand, there may be some other, more apparent and medically observable reason.

Sometimes when experiencing anxiety or stress, people will tense their jaw muscles and grind their teeth during sleep- resulting in dental as well as mandibular problems. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can anxiety and depression cause this type of jaw pain? Depression tends to make you more sensitive to pain, but I would go seek the advice of a doctor if it continues or gets worse. For the time being, I don’t suggest chewing gum or doing anything wild with your jaw. If it is truly from your depression, ask your doctor for some painkillers or antidepressants that have some pain-relieving properties.
I used to have a lot of jaw pain. Now, all my crashes have been "featured" intense anger (mostly directed inwardly) and I’ve always internalised that anger. It took my dentist to figure it out: I used to get mad (because my coffee was stirred clockwise or some other triviality) and one of the ways that I’d hold my anger in (or express it – I’m not sure which) was to clench my jaws (depression + low self esteem + anger = "who am I to say an angry word about anyting or anybody"). It got so bad that I cracked some fillings… She gave me a special guard to wear over my bottom teeth. Every time I clenched my jaw it got in the way and I got out of the habit pretty quickly. In my case these symptoms were the result of clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth during sleep (a result of tension). My dentist called the jaw clenching "bruxism". The answer has been a plastic bite plate that fits over my top teeth at night. It’s very comfortable and keeps the jaw from clenching to the point that the muscles knot up. You can get this from your dentist- who can also rule out wisdom teeth problems, etc.

[Tension - most probably [Jaw pain - maybe from clinching your teeth - [or grinding them at night. [I catch myself clinching my jaw - constantly - I have severe TMJ with jaw pain that comes and goes. It started after my jaw was broken in an attempt on my life in 1977. I began grinding my teeth in my sleep after that. I've do a variety of things for it--yoga, breathing, diet, stress reduction. The most effective things for me are reducing caffeine and a night guard the dentist made for my teeth. My jaw pain is largely gone today, but I can tense up in no time and start that again. The night guard at least minimizes the damage caused, and my jaw feels a lot better in the morning after one of those episodes. Becky L Western Washington 5/25/88

I've been on Prozac for one week and the jaw tension (clenching) disappeared the very first day I started taking the meds. Honestly, amazing. It's one of most exciting "side effects" I've experienced! : ) Jennifer Rebecca

Maybe you should see an orthodontist (sp). I pain on one side and tried a lot of things...heat, ice, and I forget what. He said it was tension because my jaw muscles were mismatched. A muscle relaxant a couple times a week to knock down did the trick. It only happened when I played the flute, which I no longer do, so I have no pain.
I've been having the jaw pain thing over the last couple days - I'm sure it's tension. I keep finding myself clenching my teeth. Oh yes, those wind instruments will get ya. I used to play oboe & English horn - regular practice will mostly prevent the jaw pain but those week-before-concert panic sessions always did me in. -elizabeth

It’s best to not make too many assumptions and get it checked out with your doctor or maybe even your dentist. Let us know what you find out. Best Wishes, Arthur

A lot of the time when my anxiety disorder is acting up, I unconsciously go around with my jaw, neck and scalp muscles tightened up, and they end up hurting a lot. Doesn’t usually get much worse if I bend over and let the blood rush to my head, though. Could perfectly well be the anxiety and depression, yes; could also be wisdom teeth, could be four or five other minor things that can be fixed. I’d take it to your medical doctor and simply make sure to mention the anxiety/depression diagnosis as one possibility, when discussing the problem with him/her. Dan
