Need TMJ advice
Question:
About 3 days after I started the Celexa, I ended up with a miserably painful left jaw. It’s been awhile since I’ve had to deal with this so I kinda forget how. 1) is jaw-clenching a side-effect of ADs? I seem to remember seeing that somewhere, but can’t remember for sure. 2) what do I do with it? It hurts just to *eat*.
Uhm, kind of weird side effect, huh? Why the left jaw and not the right one? I am sorry I cannot help, Wombn, but sorry about it. Just an idea, could it be your position while sleeping? Or grinding teeth? — Teilhard Knight The Extraterrestrial Eat the sandwich to email http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–= Over 100,000 Newsgroups – Unlimited Fast Downloads – 19 Servers =—–

Oh do I know about TMJ. It’s not a fun thing. I’ve had it since I was about 4, although it’s much (MUCH) less severe since I had my jaw surgery. Alternate ice and hot pack, take anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, tylenol), and for a little while eat "soft" foods – stuff that doesn’t need a lot of chewing, like cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, pudding, soup, etc. If you can get your jaw open and closed, try stretching the joint – open as wide as you can, and then close, with your head pointed up, so that it pulls a little on the muscle. Also, facial massage from just below your temple to down your whole jaw. A mouthguard is a must, and gum is a no-no. And if you think about it, try and have your mouth rest in a slightly open position. It will make you look kinda dumb, but it should help with the pain. And talk to your doctor. Jaw-clenching during sleep is a known side effect of Celexa. So are jaw tremors and spasms, and jaw pain unrelated to any of these. 2) what do I do with it? It hurts just to *eat*.
Parke-Davis, the manufacturer of Celexa, recommends speaking with your doctor ASAP. This sounds like it’s getting serious already, ISTM.

Alcohol and nicotine may cause grinding too, i suspect. Not sure if it’s dose related. I try to eat hard crunchy foods b4 bed (apples, carrots) to workout my jaw and get the muscles relaxed. Also, i take naproxen to get the TM joint swelling down. Seems to work. PS is your jaw joint pain worst in the AMs? Morning headaches? Emma
