New sleep schedule problem
Question:
I get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. The problem is I fall asleep at 7:30pm and wake up at 2:30am. I get moderate quality sleep. I’m a 59 year old male. Please help. Thank you in advance Brad Flanders

You might have Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (ASPS) http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/advanced.html This link has some basic info and I would also use your favorite search engine (I like www.gooogle.com ) to learn more. This will probably explain the early sleep clock but if you are only sleeping moderately well, you need to see what is causing that also (could be sleep apnea or many other problems which impact sleep quality). Could you post some more detail on your sleep quality. Maybe someone could help. Funny that you might have ASPS and that is why you are awake. I’m getting ready for bed because I have the opposite called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Strange world but nice to meet you Brad, because we badly need some new blood in here. It seems to be more common than I ever expected. BTW The melatonin for me is working brilliantly. Got to sleep and even better woke up at a decent time bright and chirpy – how very unlike me… <grin> Good luck with your own. Schroe

I’ve read that shiftworkers, jetsetters, and people with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) are able to modify their sleep schedules effectively by using "light boxes". These deliver intense light on demand (unlike the sun). I do not have personal experience with the use of light boxes, although my sleep doctor has recommended that I get one. The one he recommended costs about $200 and can be used for say 30 minutes a day while reading. It’s small and not as obtrusive as some of the early models.
