Thanks everyone!

Question:

Hi. I posted recently about staying awake while driving.  I did go to a sleep clinic in Dallas almost five years ago.  I was diagnosed and purchased a lightbox.  I don’t have any insurance, and I was about to move to a different state, so they told me how to use the lightbox, and I tried to use it without checking in with a specialist every once in a while.  I now live in a very small town, and didn’t think there was a specialist anywhere around here, but I found out on the internet tonight that there is a sleep clinic in the city where I go to school, the city that’s an hour away, the one I’m falling asleep going to and from.  But this is great news!  I should’ve been checking in with someone on a periodic basis about the light box.  And now I know there’s someone close by.  The lightbox isn’t working right now, it’s being fixed as we speak.  But now I can go make sure I’m using it right, and they can tell me how to use it with my present schedule because I can’t sit in front of it for two hours first thing in the morning with this schedule.  Thank you to everyone for their advice.  I was inspired to try to find help and I did.  I feel very relieved, because I can’t keep going on like this. Response:

Hi. If you have a sleep disorder that involves falling asleep while driving, I think it’s likely you’ll need more than a light box. I’ve only heard of light boxes being used as a treatment for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and even then the results seem to be mixed to say the least. Maybe there are other sleep problems that are helped by this, but if I remember your original post, what you described sounded a lot like a sleep apnea problem. Please check out the sleep center you mentioned. Light box therapy is controversial, even though some people say it works. My wife used it for a year or so for SAD but any effect quickly wore off and in retrospect she was unable to determine if it helped at all or if it was just a placebo effect.
