Dual exhaust (
Question:
John, I recently installed Hedman Hedders (shorties) and a Dynomax CVX exhaust on my 1991 F150 (4×4, 5sp, 302, 3.55:1 TL, 31×10.50×15). There was a significant increase in power. I haven’t hooked up the trailer yet, but there should be an improvement. All of this was CA legal, so it is legal in MA (where I also live). I have not tried the K&N filter yet. The Hedders were about $200; you can usually find the CVX system for about the same or a little more. I installed everything myself. The camshaft is a pain in the ass to change, so I didn’t. Steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Kevin, (and anyone else please provide suggestions/feedback) I saw your posting on "rec.autos.4×4" and was hoping you could give me some info about the dual exhaust conversion. How much power has it added ? I have a 1995 F150 supercab 4wd with the 302/auto and I am starting to use it for towing (boat or enclosed snowmobile trailer – each weigh ~3000 lbs). While the truck handles (brakes, steering) the weight OK, I am not impressed with the power. It really crawls up hills. I am considering trading it in on something with more motor (Dodge Ram w/360 or Ford w/5.4l). Obviously I stand to take a major $ hit An alternative is to help my 302 breathe better (exhaust, air filter, camshaft) but I’m not sure how many $ that would take. Both the Dodge and the new Ford powertrains are 330ft/lbs of torque while my 302 is 270 :< Any feedback on the effect of your modifications is appreciated thanks John — John Harrigan Manager – Eastern Applications Consulting "nothing handles like a rental car :"

If you like everything else about your truck, then how about changing your differentials (or buy lower profile tires)? If you don’t mind the tradeoff of top speed vs pulling power then for about 500 dollars you can change your differentials. The F150 has many available – if you don’t have the 3:55 then it should be all that you need (and it is a one of the standard ratio’s for the F150). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Kevin, (and anyone else please provide suggestions/feedback) I saw your posting on "rec.autos.4×4" and was hoping you could give me some info about the dual exhaust conversion. You might also consider the super chip route. While I have not used it on a Ford. I have several friends who have used them on GM trucks with great success. Most vehicles are factory tuned to run on the lowest octane gas generally available. By reprograming the chip, you can program it to run on a higher octane fuel and get much better preformance. My Friend has a 96 Tahoe with the Vortec 350. He installed larger TA tires. In it’s stock configuration he could hardly squeek them. After reprograming the chip, he can now smoke em. But he now has to run premium gas.
