5-htp and Insomnia and Depression
Question:
Among several of the natural alternative supplements, ephedrine (which I believe is in Ma Huang) worries me a lot. Ephedrine is an alpha- agonist, which constricts blood vessels. That’s why it’s good for runny nose-it constricts the blood vessels. So do most of the over-the counter nasal sprays.
I havent taken over the counter cold/sinus drugs since I was a teenager …. they give me a headache and make me sleepy. Ephedrine perks people up because it abnormally raises your blood pressure. May patients with chronically high blood pressure complain of being "washed out" when their blood pressure is returned to normal.
that’s what happens to me when I drink a second cup of coffee … but not when a drink a tea of MaHuang. I usually have low blood pressure … and on those occasions when my blood pressure is high/er (I can tell) I do not take stimulants of any kind (coffee, tea, soda, exedrin, etc.) I thing Ephedrine is Really Bad for people with heart problems and high blood pressure. The most effective remedy for being washed out is that holistic approach, exercise!
I do my best to exercise … you are right movement promotes higher energy levels. PS For 90% of my patients with sinusitis, I’m unabashedly "alternative." No drugs – no antibiotics, no antihistamines, no nasal decongestants. (They’ve not been shown in clinical trials to help with relief of acute sinusitis.) Here’s what – saline nasal spray (you can even make it up at home, if you’re thrifty!) Humid air, like in a shower or bathroom, a few times a day. Drink plenty of fluid, unless you have a heart or kidney problem.
I agree with you … I have been doing the saline nasal treatments for over 13 years now … they really help
as well as the humid air (i have gone thru numerous humidifiers …. which brings up a question I have re: humidifiers. Years ago when the newest class of humidifers came out … more powerful, no powder, finer spray … I read that they could cause problems with breathing (because of the fine spray, I guess). Do you know of any precautions re: humidifiers? I would really like to get one of the fine spray, quieter, longer lasting humidifiers. This kind of points out the broad spread of "Alternative Medicine:" I like the simple, homespun remedies if possible; but I frown on popping pills, whether they’re drug company or herbal, if they can be avoided. —
I agree … which is why I take my herbals as tea, and rarely buy pre-packaged formulas. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Good health to you! Doc Steve (These are just my personal impressions. -d – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I use a combination of Ma Huang (natural ephedra) in low levels, mixed with other herbs in a special blend, to keep my metabolism and energy levels balanced. What I tend to experience is a natural, all-day energy boost that is *level* and *focused*, not at all "bounce-off-the-wall" like some folks experience with ephedra/caffeine products. Also, as your use of the product is not consistent, you can naturally expect some variations in your reaction to it. I’m 31, 5′5", around 124 lbs., keep my water intake up and my herb intake balanced (plus I know the testing methods used by my manufacturer, and *completely* trust their purity and consistency) and I *never* get reactions such as you’ve described. I wish the best for you in your quest. Hope this helps! Live long and prosper, Teresa Stevens Independent Nutrition Consultant (Doctor-Trained, might I proudly add!)

Does anyone one know if there are any symptoms for ephedra withdrawal. Last wednesday, I had taken two tablets of Twin labs Ripped Fuel (ephedra and caffeine) and had nervous reaction. I had been taking it intermittently (any day I worked out) for around a month and a half. I quit taking it, but I still get nervous, and every now and then I get a numb sensation in either my left shoulder or jaw or side. I went to my school’s health services, and my pulse checked out real well (66 pm). Has this happened to anyone else? thanks, once again, sorry if this isn’t the appropriate group. —

As far as I know the Griffonia 5-HTP is 5-HTP. Otherwise it wouldn’t say 5-HTP on the bottle. Syd Before you buy.

Jonathan, *Might* be withdrawal. Might not. The first question I would have is: How much WATER are you drinking? 64 oz. daily is BARE MINIMUM for active individuals such as yourself. Safer for you is closer to between a gallon and a gallon and a half. With any use of herbs, especially combined w/ caffeine (and you don’t mention the source of the caffeine, so it’s hard to use that as a qualifier), it is VERY important to insure you are using a reputable source whose levels of consistency are adequately tested. I don’t know anything about Twin Labs’ products, and therefore cannot comment on their consistency. As you are using this as a boost before exercising, it’s even MORE important that you keep your water intake up. I don’t know that it’s necessarily the ephedra that is affecting you. Probably more like the *combination* of the herb w/ extra caffeine. Also, is this a NATURAL product, or is it a lab-manufactured chemical substitute? That could also make a HUGE difference. Other factors, such as your height, weight, any health probs you might have, and your diet, can also contribute to the effects you’re having. Have you made any changes in your routine, even small ones that you thought had no effect? Also something to look at. If you’re not rehydrating *every 15 minutes* during exercise, you’re setting yourself up for dehydration, which can cause the nervous, numb, tingly feeling you’re experiencing, in some people, anyway. Also keep your protein levels up, so your body has enough fuel to provide adequate amts. for your workout sessions. Without enough protein (balanced w/ carbs, of course), you’re setting yourself up for muscle distress and an overworking of all your systems. And lemme tell ya—Passing out during/after exercise due to lack of nutrition and/or lack of adequate water intake is NOOOOOOOOOOOO FUN! I use a combination of Ma Huang (natural ephedra) in low levels, mixed with other herbs in a special blend, to keep my metabolism and energy levels balanced. What I tend to experience is a natural, all-day energy boost that is *level* and *focused*, not at all "bounce-off-the-wall" like some folks experience with ephedra/caffeine products.
