Advice and Support needed!…Nighttime problems…

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all… first message in this group. For the past 3 months, I’ve been battling with an unknown ailment that has caused severe anxiety, trembling, severe insomnia, numbness, dizziness, headaches, and fuzzy eyesight.  It’s been a struggle for survival every day.  Today I did some research and realized that I think my blood sugar is low.  I’ve compounded the problem the past months by not eating much, as the terror of the symptoms made me quite nauseated.  I now notice that in retrospect, there were times I felt absolutely terrible, but forced myself to eat something, and I felt quite a bit better afterwards. So, I’m going for a 3 hour glucose test tomorrow.  While i wait for the results, I was hoping for advice in how best to handle low blood sugar at night.  For the past 3 weeks I haven’t gotten more than 3 or 4 hours sleep, as my body always wakes itself at 3am with trembling and anxiety (I have no trouble falling asleep it seems).  I then can’t get back to sleep. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do, what to eat, how much etc when i wake up, assuming it is low blood sugar? thanks.  Any other help or support would be greatly appreciated!!

The problem is, we don’t know what is causing these feelings. Unfortunately, diabetes and the high BG (blood glucose) that can come about because of it can also cause the same symptoms as a hypo (low blood glucose).  Thyroid problems can cause similar symptoms.  So can Cushing’s syndrome and probably some other things I don’t know about.  You should get the results of your 3 hour GTT right away.  If you don’t, and are left hanging for a few days, the best I can tell you to do is to eat whatever you’ve been eating to alleviate the symptoms. — Type 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~jbove/

Response:

First get tested and discuss the results with your doctor! The healthiest meal plan for most people is a combination of meals and snacks that combine protein, a bit of fat, and carbohydrates (preferably higher fiber types). Exercise is equally important. Cindy Wells (exact diet programs should be discussed with a "good" registered dietician and your doctor – "good" in this case means one willing to look at your current eating habits and calorie needs and help you modify from there instead of handing you a list and giving you a whole new diet that won’t let you fit a few treats and favorite foods into your new lifestyle)

See the doctor first.  Guessing will not help.  If you are a diabetic we have a lot of good people with information. A doctor is the one to diagnose you..                                                   Guy
