advice: how to help my friend?
Question:
: my best friend gets very intense migraines : whenever he is in the sun, even if it’s just : for a short time. he says he’s been to the : doctors and the natropaths etc and nothing : has ever been ‘found out’ or ‘helped’. : does anyone else get them from being in : the sun? is it the sun that’s doing it or is : it just a coincidence that his migraines : come out when the sun is shining? I get migraines if I spend any significant period of time with the sun in my eyes. The last time I got glasses I got the kind that darken in light, plus I wear a billed cap if I’m going to be out for a while. Even that doesn’t always help. : he’s also pretty bad when it comes to : sleeping (insomnia) and is a pretty : small fellow (skinny dude)…what do : you all suggest? I’m not sure that being a "skinny dude"
can cause migraine, but upsets in sleep pattern (too much or too little) are quite popular as triggers of migraine. You’re a good friend to him. Good luck to the both of you. Priscilla

Libby– Sun is a notorious migraine trigger. It always gives me one. –Kelly
what do you do to help relieve yourself of them? libby… — "I actually believed for a moment that it would be possible to change things…" (Thom Yorke, 1997, on the inspiration of the Tibet Festival in New York)

Libby, I also have a problem with Migraines when I am in the sun, even if it is for a short time. I used to go to Florida and lay in the sun before the Migraines started. Now I usually avoid the sun. My husband and I usually go to Mississippi to the Casinos for entertainment because it is inside and air conditioned. I also have had problems with insomnia and I started taking Ambien 10 mg. and have been able to cut down to 2.5 mg. and that is enough to help me rest and good sound rest I have found is good for migraines and a fairly regular sleeping schedule. I find that understanding what triggers my Headaches eliminates some of the problems. It makes me feel very delicate at times and lots of times I have to say no to people. My husband understands and is great about this. This is real and not just a coincidence. I am also triggered by the sun. Unfortunately sunglasses don’t help that much so I just pretty much stay out of it. Not getting enough sleep also always throws me into a migraine. I take Tylenol PM (usually 3 although rec. dosage is 2). It doesn’t leave you all drugged out the next day and works pretty well for me. I have to really watch taking it on a regular basis though or I will rebound. Hope this helped a little. Wishing you luck, Stephanie

Libby: Lots of folks, including myself, are extremely light-sensitive or glare-sensitive, and this is a trigger for our migraines. I wear the darkest possible dark gray or dark green lens, with 100% UVA and UBA protection, every minute I am out in the sunshine or driving, etc. Even on an overcast day. I also only purchase good, optical quality lens and comfortable frames, to avoid visual distortion or earpiece and nosepiece discomfort, both of which trigger headaches. If your friend has insomnia, this, too, can be a trigger, guaranteed 100% to give me a headache, Never fails. Many have found that irregular sleeping and eating habits exacerbate their migraines. About being thin, well I had migraines and CDH when I was 98 lbs, and I have them now at considerably more than that (don’t ask!
