Antidepressants and drowsiness question.
Question:
It seems that every one I try (except Prozac which had sexual side affects), including Serzone, Zoloft, and Celexa make me drowsy. I am wondering if it could be directly related to the amount of sleep I get. Does anyone else have similar problems with this? I don’t usually sleep as much as I should. 6 hrs. a night, tops. Or is it just the nature of the drugs? Thanks in advance for any input! -= Aaron =- remove "blah" from email address
Response:
all the ssri’s pretty much cause drowsiness….its the nature of the beast: more serotonin, more drowsiness…..otoh, depression is often linked to sleep disorders which it sounds to me you might have (6 hrs a night is not as good as it might be) some of the newer tricyclics might have less of an effect, you might ask your dr about them susan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It seems that every one I try (except Prozac which had sexual side affects), including Serzone, Zoloft, and Celexa make me drowsy. Prozac, Serzone and Zoloft made me so drowsy that I slept or napped most of the day; when I was awake, I wanted to go to sleep. Same effect from Paxil, Tofranil, Pamelor, Desipramine, Effexor, Remeron. Stuck
Response:
I’m not qualified to speak on this as only ever having has two AD’s. The first were a member of the tricyclics which just totally stuffed me and made me unable to do anything whatsoever because I was permanently drowsy and the second AD, Prozac gives me insomnia making my sleeping pattern erratic and therefore I grab sleep whenever I can. Depending on how well my meds are working I could sleep forever (course that is depression talking too) but a few times a week I have trouble sleeping for very long and can get up on a few hours sleep or none. USUALLY though I am forever tired and sleepy and wanting to be in the comfort of my bed. <sigh meds or depression that is the question. Becky
Response:
Aaron, I had the same problems on Paxil and Pamelor….I’m on Wellbutrin now, and it’s a world of difference…I actually *have* energy, and I’m able to sleep better at night, too…..
