Ativan/Lorezapam for Prednisone Insomnia

Question:

>>They said it was a paradoxical reaction.<<

Hi Kate, Then we are *both "paradoxes", as I had the same reaction…and I took *two of them, and hour apart!   Cracked me up, because the label instructions made it sound as though you should already be *lying down before you take one!  Ahhh, well…  <smile> Judith

I sat upright in bed, walked out the door (my legs had been working like shit), walked to the mall (three miles), walked and walked around the mall, bought two pair of jeans, walked to the supermarket — at least another mile, Hey Kate, That would be great. If I could have that same effect. If the docs could give me that drug. For chemo nausea. <laughing> I would love to be able to get up. And walk around. Even if it’s for short term. <smiling> It’s amazing what effects drugs can have. On us. With my luck. I probably won’t have ‘any effect’ at all. <laughing> Take care, Dawn

Just thought I’d share this with others who may be having similar problems. Yesterday I got desperate for something to help with the insomnia caused by a prednisone taper (cutting from 50 to 40 mg/day today). Horrid!  I tried everything Sunday: lots of swimming, and then a sauna, which I customarily avoid because the heat aggravates my symptoms, but a sauna is a surefire knock-me-out.  Knocked me out for about 2 hours only. I don’t like taking more drugs, but I needed something.  I was totally strung out.  My doc gave me a prescription for ativan — also known as lorezapam.  Ah!  Blessed sleep!  I giggled like a baby as I felt myself slipping under.  And no side effects today. Sweet dreams. SF ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/       Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

I have been taking Ativan off and on since I was on IV Solumedrol. It is very good for my FMS also.  Whatever works! Diane W. Orlando

Ah, ativan.  My doctor prescribed it for me for after chemo nausea. He said to bring my husband to drive me home because it would knock me out wham!  Well, I took it, my hubby drove me home, tucked me in, and went back to work. I sat upright in bed, walked out the door (my legs had been working like shit), walked to the mall (three miles), walked and walked around the mall, bought two pair of jeans, walked to the supermarket — at least another mile, sat down unable to move, found a quarter and called my husband for help.  He was frantic having come home and found the bed empty and no sign of this person who was supposed to be sound asleep. They said it was a paradoxical reaction.  So I avoid ativan now.  I have similar strange reactions to valium which is a cousin of ativan. However, it has been of great help to others with nausea and with sleeplessness. Kate PS — My neuro calls prednisone the paper-bag folding drug.
