average length of menopause
Question:
I had a partial hysterectomy at age 32, and started having hot flashes at age 46, so I haven’t a clue when my last period would have been. Pat

No transitional period, but suddenly, yes, there they are. Not too often, yet, but I’m not getting complacent. ________________________________________________________________________ Louise Bremner (log at gol dot com) If you want a reply by e-mail, don’t write to my Yahoo address!

Mine has had them for years. Sharon……..Don’t think of it as getting hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches.

Too much of a coincidence, in my mind, that mine showed up 2 months after my last period, & got progressively worse, before starting to (relatively) wind down a few years post-meno. They showed up in tandem w/ horrid insomnia. Flashes by day, insomnia by night. Also, why, if they’re not related to menopause, do millions of menopausal woman complain about hot flashes – yet we don’t hear from hoards of men about them being a rather obnoxious part of life? What triggers them in men who get them, I have no clue. Cathy

She didn’t say "not ~related~ to menopause", she said "not ~specific~ to menopause". There’s a noticeable difference. do millions of menopausal > woman complain about hot flashes – yet we don’t hear from hoards of men > about them being a rather obnoxious part of life?
I think it’s that macho thing. What guy wants to complain to his buds about something considered to be a women’s issue? > What triggers them in men who get them, I have no clue.
My husband had them for several years, and is starting to occasionally get them again. (Night sweats, only.) Marilee – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Cathy

There has to be *something(s)* that triggers them – for him & any other men. Wonder what it is/they are? Otoh, if menopausal hot flashes haven’t really been figured out yet, then I guess no one’s figured those out… Cathy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Marilee > > Cathy

Maybe… I already considered thatm – first thing I thought of; but if a guy’s flashes were anything as annoying as some of mine have been, I think he’d wind up complaining to at least some people. And the cat’d eventually be out of the bag. > > > My husband had them for several years, and is starting to occasionally > get > > > them again. True, but supposedly (AFAIK) they don’t take the quick & rather drastic dips (& rises?) that ours do. But rather a s-lo-w, grad-u-al thing. Or is that conventional wisdom not necessarily true, perhaps? IOW – maybe (for some men, at least) small windows of quick dips, for example? Cathy

I don’t think guys talk about that kind of thing the way women do. Besides that, they ~do~ complain to some people. My husband mentions it to me and his doctor, but he surely doesn’t tell the guys he goes hunting with, or the other agents in his sales district, or the client across the desk. He just wouldn’t do that, nor would most men, IMO. The cat’s out of the bag about as far as it’s getting, I think. We know here that some men have hot flashes. It’s not a secret. It’s out there. It’s just not common knowledge, and the guys that have them seem to think they’re rare birds. Personally, I think it’s a closely guarded but fairly common secret. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> > > > My husband had them for several years, and is starting to occasionally > > get > > > > them again. But not all women have hot flashes, either, yet we all go through menopause. There’s no proof, as far as I know, that hot flashes are caused by estrogen fluctuations. It’s a theory. It could be wrong. But rather a s-lo-w, grad-u-al thing. Or is that > conventional wisdom not necessarily true, perhaps? I also don’t think men actually allow themselves to think of them as "hot flashes". They’d just claim they were "suddenly too warm" and toss open a window or something. General knowledge that they exist. If enough doctors hear it enough, they’re going to start telling one another… And eventually a launching pad for finding out what’s causing them. Although I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. Cathy

My husband has been heat-sensitive for as long as I’ve known him. He has lifelong dermatitis, which acts up if he gets overly warm,so he avoids dressing too warmly. Sharon……..Don’t think of it as getting hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches.

But – they’re (hot flashes) so different than feeling like it’s simply too warm in a room. One can tell that the heat’s emanating from your own body; you feel like a veritable radiator – at least I do. It would take a _lot_ of self-convincing, after experiencing a bunch of them, to think that the hot flashes aren’t down to one’s own body Vs. the environment. Cathy
