Norm, what you mentioned makes sense but I think some unknown as yet brain imbalance or Unknown Insomnia Factor :o ) is in play. Recently, I’ve had Lori wake my ass up whenever she sees me sleeping without my gear on. Sometimes I can fall back asleep rigged up, sometimes I can’t. I almost never can go to sleep initially wearing the mask or nasal pillows or whatever new stuff I’m trying. This is wearing me down! Mike — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Norm: I disagree. Insomnia prevents one from going to  sleep, so how is the OSA going to wake you when you haven’t gotten to sleep? One has to get to sleep first, and the small dosage of Lorazepam enables me to sleep. And then the Bi-PAP controls the OSA to alllow me to continue sleeping. Once again, we’re all different. A year with CPAP/BIPAP  has had absolutely no effect on my persistent Insomnia, but my sleep doc insists that I "keep using the BiPAP, it’s helping you, but I can’t treat Insomnia.  It’s not going to get any better. Keep using the Ambien, but not every night.".

I can’t seem to get to sleep at night. I have Sleep Apnea. I’ve been on  my bipap since Dec 24 2002. Granted that’s only 16 nights now but in those 16 nights I have not fallen asleep once while using my bipap machine.   I am at 14  over 10  on pressure. I don’t seem to have a problem with the pressure as far as breathing easy goes. My problem is I start to relax  and feel like I’m getting close to falling asleep and then I feel like I’m starved for air. Then I get this panic feeling. Some nights I fight with it for couple 2 or 3 hours .  Tonight I fell asleep watching TV around 11:30 pm . I woke up 12 :45 am. I just got a heated humidifier  today and started tonight to use it. Some nights I have trouble and I give up turn off the machine and just roll over and fall right to sleep and sleep 4 or 5 hours straight through without waking.. Its now 4:50 am and I haven’t been able to sleep a wink. I would think that by now I could at least fall asleep at least once for even a little while. Tonight is  a little worse than normal. Any suggestion welcome??? still sleepless in Kansas City

I used to have horrible insomnia, also. I think I related here before that I was in the hospital three years ago and went several days and nights without literally sleeping a minute. I wise young pulmonoligist finally suggested Lorazepam — Ativin (sp?) — an antianxiety drug often given to cancer patients in larger doses. That first night I had the best sleep I’d had in years.  It was more than two years later that it was also determined  that I had OSA and some CSA.  Anyway, I’m still taking a small dosage of Lorezapam and I’ve successfully adapted to BiPAP.  I know sleep the sleep of the innocent. It is just my opinion, but I don’t see how one could possilble adapt to CPAP/BiPAP, without first getting successfual treatment for the insomnia. I realize all our cases are different, but I just wanted to relate what worked for me. Cheers, Hal S.

Thanks Hal, I agree. Usually when I mention my insomnia I just get this blank stare from doctors with "would you like some Ambien".
