CAN"T SLEEP!!!
Question:
Help– it’s happening again. I go to bed as tired as could be, yawning and practically already dreaming. Then, nothing. No sleep. No tiredness. I do like the experts say, give it twenty minutes and then get up and do something till I feel tired again. Last week I was up from 1:00 a.m. and never made it to sleep before time for work. Next day a WHOPPER #10 HA set in, and I was down and out for 4 days. NOW IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN!!! I don’t want any more, I can’t take any more. I’ve had the Zomig, nothing, I’ve popped a sleeping pill, Nothing!!!! I’m just so scared that tomorrow it will start all over again!!! ****Elaine, scared and in pain****

Lord, sweetie, where, and what, are the words that can ease your plight; the thoughts, alive with caring and with a soothing energy to still your pain? If they could be harnessed, and sent your way, you would be swathed in a warm, cuddly, pain free cocoon made by all of us here. To a pain free day and peaceful sleep, B’racha

Boy, can I ever relate to that! Sometimes I try sitting in my recliner. I bought one of those chair size vibrator pads and I put it on my chair, then I cuddle up in a really soft, comfy blanket and pillow my head with one of those neck support pillows. Then I close my eyes and picture relaxing each part of my body from my toes on up. I’m often surprised at how tense my muscles have become from the pain. Whenever I sleep downstairs in my recliner, my husband knows it was a bad night. I also agree that your dr. could prescribe an antidepressant like elavil. It really makes you tired. how about a whole thread on what people do when they can’t sleep? there seem to be a lot of us in this predicament. some of the things that i have done is watch nick at nite, drink camomille tea, get up & take a hot shower or bath, read something boring (like a text book), and tell myself that it doesn’t really matter ’cause i have nothing important to do tomorrow anyway (yeah, I know, Ha! easy for the retired to say!), totally ignoring the fact that fatigue has been a major trigger for me. once or twice, i even got up & did some house cleaning! (it didn’t work, of course …. none of the above has actually WORKED … but at least i accomplished something useful!)

Elaine, I am sooooo sorry! I hate it when I can’t sleep. If I am having trouble sometimes reciting nursury rymes in my head works. (please don’t laugh! ) I think that only works if you are awake because your mind is going on and on about stuff. Another thing I do is to sit in my rocking chair and listen to music. Other than that I don’t know how to help you. It sounds awful. Maybe you could call your doctor and tell him/her what is happening. Take care, Jackie AKA Poop A Doodle or Poopie

Hi….these suggestion may seem simple and silly, but they work for me! First, try relaxation techniques. Things like picturing yourself in a place where you once before and felt very relaxed and at peace…like at the beach. Let your whole body relax, each toe, foot, every part of your body – and imagine EVERYTHING–the smells, the warmth of the sun on your body, the sounds of the waves and sea gulls, and the breeze blowing. Keep doing this…I usually fall asleep after about 10-15 minutes. Also, I sometimes take an antihistimine before I go to bed (is that bad?) Anyway, it makes me sleepy. I also like Melatonin, but I take that when I know I’ll only be able to get 4 or 5 hours of sleep, it makes me sleep deeper, but it also gives me very weird dreams. I hope that you get over this soon…. I used suffer from insomnia when I was in my early teen years, and just worrying about the fact that I couldn’t sleep kept me up even more. Good luck! I hope by now you have had some sleep. When I can’t get to sleep I do two things 1) Get up and have a hot drink, caffeine free and read a book for a half hour or hour 2) Lie flat and force myself to think of one topic. I try to make this fairly complex to give me as much time as possible and try to include sound and light effects (all in my head without waking SO). Generally after a while of this I drift off. Sometimes the drugs we take can cause sleeplessness. I was on Inderal for awhile and had a horrible time sleeping. I’d wake up early and not be able to go back to sleep. Ask your doctor for some help, as insomnia doesn’t help the migraine situation, and it’s a vicious cycle. Greta

Elaine: Sorry for your insomnia nightmare. As you noted, lack of sleep is a supreme migraine trigger, so I hope you can find some relief. I ‘d take a look at all the meds you are taking. I have heard many people say that a late night dose of Stadol caused insomnia, and many other drugs contribute to this also. I found Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, numeous other antidepressants, caused insomnia. Cold and cough medications often do, as well as inhaled asthma meds. Sometimes of course it is just the pain and stress we experience, and if you are not taking an antidepressant, you might want to try one of the mildly sedating ones, like Pamelor. I take it about an hour or two before bedtime, get sleepy at normal bedtime, and generally sleep through the night. I tried Elavil or (generic name) Amitriptyline, but at even low doses, I was a zombie the next morning.. It just requires a lot of detective work to find out what is causing YOUR sleep disturbance. I also had to cut out all caffiene after say, 6:00pm. Even some pain medications, especially those with caffiene, keep me awake and even make me feel "revved up"..I dont notice this during the day, only at night. It is a dratted miserable experience. One doctor told me if I just got in the recliner, relaxed and closed my eyes, I was still getting rest…BUT, it still does not seem to replace sleep and I still got a blazing migraine the next morning. Good luck ..let us know how it works out, we all learn from each others’ experiences and trials. Jane Harkins. "It is in the shelter of each other that people live…." (Irish proverb)

Thanks to all who answered my insomnia predicament. I’m hoping for a better night tonight. I didn’t manage to get even ten minutes for it was time for the alarm to go off. Catherine is right—maybe we should have a collection of ideas of what HA sufferers do on these long lonely sleepless nights. We are bound to come up with some good ideas. A post from Caroline Colbert suggests that it could have something to do with Stadol. I tend to agree with her. Has anyone else experienced insomnia after a late evening dose of Stadol? Thanks again!!! *****Elaine*****
I’ve never taken stadol, but I’ve sure had the experience on prednisone! Yikes, honey, I feel for you! Youa re just mega wired and exhausted at the same time, it’s horrible. Would any exercise help you? A glass of warm milk and some cookies?
