Dexedrine/ insomnia
Question:
i have lots of clients who take spansules 2 and even 3 times a day. It depends on the individual and the severity of the ADD.

I take a 15 mg. Dexedrine spansule when I wake up (7:00am) and another in 4-5 hours. But I still have insomnia. I thought dexedrine only stayed in your system for 8 hours max. What’s going on?

I had that problem too. If I took it too late in the day, I could not sleep at night. Matter of fact, I can’t sleep even if I don’t take it. Well then, I suppose that I have nothing interesting to add to the converstaion. it sucked not being about to fall asleep untill 4am, when you had to go to work for a 12 hour shit at 6:50. Dexedrine Spansules (the capsules) are designed to last 10-12 hours and usually do so, though they may fade in effectiveness over the last 3-5 hours. There is probably still enough in your blood stream to keep you awake with the schedule you mention. Paul Elliott, M.D.

When I first was diagnosed with ADD I asked to try the Dex. Spanules due to their long acting effect. My Dr. also prescribed 2 a day, starting with 5mg, and working up to 15mg twice a day (1 before going to work at 6:45 am, the other after work at 3:30. I don’t think the Dr. really knew much about dex. for ADD cause he kept raising the dosage until I began to lose weight. Weight loss, (I guess) he assumed, was a sign that the spanules were "working" to help my ADD. I lost over 60 lbs. in about 10 weeks, and had much trouble sleeping. I became anemic, and later became psychotic due to sleep deprivation. I ended up in a hospital for over two weeks. My current Dr. shook his head when I told him my pharmacological history. He is an expert in meds, and he told me that the spanules should only prescribed once a day! YOU ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE IF YOU TAKE THE DEXADRINE SPANULES TWICE A DAY!!! If you want to take a psychostimulant twice daily, I’d recommend switching to Adderall. I’ve also tried Ritalin and Wellbutrin & Cylert, and the Adderall has been the most effective, and "smoothest" of the medications that I have taken. Jim from NJ
