Okay, I can see where this would fall under the Electric shock sensation under the skin and in the head.  I’m glad I asked.  I was picturing something completely different.  A visable shaking of the head, ala Katherine Hepburn. Thanks. Cool Runnings, HomemakerJ

I don’t know, but ironically I saw a lady in a store today who had the same thing happening.  When she turned to the side and smiled at me it stopped.  I’d guess she was in her early 40s.  I had been staring at her because her head was shaking and I wondered what caused it. I also saw a rheumatologist, just in case.  Also negative, thank goodness, both bloodwork & actual physical exam.  But rheumatoid arthritis also tends to show up in a symmetrical pattern, whereas I tend to ache a lot more on one side than the other. Au contraire IMO, maybe more efficient but  it is a full hour of total relaxation..the masseuse uses several methods including foot reflexology ( really interesting) and working with pressure points, trying to that to myself would be like playing Twister.  I dont expect someone to fix me, I just enjoy getting a massage! jeez, lighten up!

Thanks for your reply My head shakes involuntary, but only when I am relaxed and facing forward. I can stop it by leaning my head to either side or forwards or backwards – sounds as though a muscle is involved somewhere. do you think? Lyn

Response:

It could be an inner ear balance problem. I have heard about a benign condition of the inner ear that seems to show up at midlife (not menopause). This may be an avenue to persue ….or even speculate on the "balance" in your life, meta-physically. You never know. J Lyn Tambe <lyn.ta…@virgin.net> wrote in message

I would like to research this stiff shoulders and neck symptom, as I have very few flushes but suffer with varying degrees of shoulder and neck pain..when I was given Provera, my shoulders ached so badly I could not stand up straight.   I treat myself to a very deep tissue massage every two weeks, but could use one every day!   Maybe we need to install a few massage chairs in the Whine & Whoes… Martha – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Just a thought, but I wonder how many of you reporting these problems have also started spending a lot more time at the computer coincident with the onset (or progress) of perimenopause? I know I have, and I believe that’s to blame for initiating a lot of the head and neck pains. It may be that aging, peri or just plain lack of *movement* exacerbate the problems, or make it harder to recover, but when it comes to skeleto-muscular aches and pains, I personally look to what I’m doing with/to my body before I assume a hormonal cause. Distraction, maybe?  I have a chronic sciatic problem, and I’ve been amused to realize that it rarely bothers me when I’m having, for instance, a Bleed from Hell. In my case, I have the feeling it’s because I can only focus on one type of discomfort at a time. Or maybe the flashes act like an internal heat pack … (-; –Pat Kight kig…@peak.org

I didn’t get a computer until June ‘98, & I was already 1.5 years post-meno by then.  This neck/shoulder aching had kicked in years before, in early peri.  However, I had already noticed that after an hour or so of correcting papers at night, that it certainly didn’t *help* my neck.  Cathy Pat Kight <kig…@ucs.orst.edu> wrote in message

My neck & shoulders, & the base of the back of my head have been very achy since peri, too.  It, too, is completely muscular – which is the good news. I’m *assuming* it’s hormone related, considering when it kicked in.  Plus, post-meno, I’ve noticed that it gets better when I’m not experiencing hot flashes. For a while there, it was so bad that I’d get muscle spasms which didn’t allow me to turn my head much to the side – and that was downright dangerous when backing out of the driveway!  Started going to a chiropractor, & that helped a lot re: the bad spasms.  (It also changed my former view of chiropractors; they know a *lot* about the body.)  All of this muscle tightness results in chronic headaches; I have learned to differentiate which headaches are sinus, which are originating from the back of my neck, etc.   Cathy
