HELP: Cramps with the 'runs' after running 30 minutes+
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sometimes after running longer than 30 minutes I get severe cramps and the ‘runs’ for some time after forcing me on the toilet. This can last right into the next morning. Foul smelling gas often accompanies it. It is almost as if my body is purging itself. I was once told that this was caused by being out of shape and was due to blood being taken away from the digestive system as you run. I don’t believe it to be the case. I’ve lost 30lbs and it seems to happen as frequent as always. There doesn’t seem to be any trend to when it will happen. I’ve tried changing my stride, fasting, not running from the gut and eating a large meal right after my run. If anyone has an answer to why this happens I will greatly appreciate it
If it were me John, I’d want to get my colon checked out first to see what’s going on. Second, I’d do some self massage to the abdominal area and work at relaxing the spasm that is most likely happening to your colon. If you push into the left side of the abdomen and rub back and forth as you push in, you’ll most likely find an area where you can feel a strong pulse. If you massage lightly or push that area, you’ll feel the colon relax. Often as it relaxes you can hear the gurgling or growling as the spasm releases and the colon contents start to flow again. Often psychological issues are at the source of unresolved issues of stress. Here’s a list of things that people go to see a doctor about and the majority of them happen to relate directly to excessive stress (I believe compiled by the American Association of Family Physicians- and relayed to me by Lee Rice, D.O. Sports Medicine physician, San Diego Sports Medicine Center): Signs Of Distress Irritible Bowel Syndrome Headache Backache Insomnia Noise intolerance Rashes - about 85% stress related Angina Asthma Relationship issues Depression Anger Allergies Colds Slow healing Mood Instability Elevated C.A.T.S (Caffeine, Alcohol, Tobacco, Substances (legal or illegal) Weight (up or down) Itching Libido (depressed) Chronic Fatigue Fibromyalgia Loss of Perspective and in general: anhedonia (Loss of joy or enjoyment) — In health and on the run, Ozzie Gontang Maintainer – rec.running FAQ http://www.faqs.org/faqs/by-newsgroup/rec/rec.running.html Director, San Diego Marathon Clinic, est. 1975 Mindful Running http://www.mindfulness.com/mr.asp
