beatcity, A word of caution.  Advice about a book is pretty harmless though might very well draw a lot of fire if the book has an agenda that is controversial. Advice such as "Better start on the soy products right away" will generally draw a lot of fire.  Better phrasing would be "I understand many women have found soy products useful for reducing hot flashes."  The first is advice, the second is the conveying of information. It would be a good idea to read up on the side effects and risks of estrogen use before you go seeking it out.  If you have a uterus, there are serious risks to taking unopposed estrogen. — -~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-*~~-*~~-*~~- -Grey- Ignorance is an equal opportunity destroyer. -~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-*~~-*~~-*~~-

Welcome to the group.  There is a lot of information on the "unofficial official" web site at http://www.oxford.net/~tishy/asm.html There are a number of women on this group who have tried HRT and stopped it, who have tried HRT and are still on it, and who have not tried HRT and are trying a number of different things.  If the Prempro isn’t making you feel good, you might want to start researching to find out if you really want to keep taking it.  Unfortunately, there are no easy answers…each of us has to do the homework and then make her own decision.  This is a place that will help you to do that. — -~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~- -Grey- -~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-~~*~~-

snip Hi Frances, I started taking the UK equivalent to Prempro last November. In my case I was bleeding like a drain and experiencing nausea, vomiting and gut pains with my hot flushes (which lasted far longer than a flash). The bleeding is under control, as is the nausea and I was able to return to work. One of the ladies here suggested taking the tablets last thing at night to help counter mood changes and to help reduce  insomnia. This is applicable especially to the last phase of the cycle when you take progesterone as well as oestrogen. I noticed facial oedema from about month 2 and more recently my stomach has ballooned as you describe, though I haven’t gained much weight in general.  This I definitely blame on the progesterone. I’ve been feeling incredibly lethargic and shortly before returning to work I started having panic attacks and feelings of anxiety and depression, fear of not being able to cope I guess. The jury is out as to whether the lethargy is hormonally induced, though it’s about 8-4 as we speak and again I feel it is the progesterone which is the problem. Basically it is like being pregnant or having PMS most of the time. There is the added problem that your body’s natural production levels fluctuate enormously. One week you may feel flooded with oestrogen and in no need of HRT, the next you feel it is zilch even with it. Until this month I did feel that my libido and vaginal lubrication were improved by using HRT but I personally would not consider using it long-term just for those. Only you can weigh up whether you feel better with or without it to get you through a bad patch of flushes and night sweats. The web site, which Grey has mentioned, will give you a lot of food for thought especially with regard to long term use. You’ve certainly come to the right place to acquire a whole variety of opinions and anecdotes, some very challenging especially to the fog-bound brain :-) Best wishes Joanna

Hi.  My name is Frances and I am 46.  I have been on Prempro for just over 2 months now as I couldn’t stand the sleepless nights due to night sweats.  Apart from the decline of my periods and the hot flashes I had no other smptoms of menopause.  However since being on Prempro I am depressed, sometimes bursting into tears for no reason and I don’t seem to have any energy.  The house is looking a mess with laundry piling up all over the place (good job my husband is away on business for a few weeks).  I’ve also gained weight with my stomach looking like a baloon.  If I didn’t know better I would swear I was pregnant! I’m so fed up with it all I’m beginning to think that I should just come off Prempro and put up with the hot flashes.  Is there anyone that can give me some advice. Frances
