Help yourself! What to do about ……… (part 1 of ?)

Question:

The NY TIMES printed an article about osteoporosis that’s worth looking at. The date is Sept 30.  Personally, it convinced me that bone scans are a very good idea.

Differences in basal metabolism, amount of activity, size and weight will influence the amount of carbo’s the body needs to get from an outside source. Studies have proven that (in general) approx. 50% of your diet should be unrefined carbo’s (stay away from the refined one’s). Hi girls! It cannot be denied that the transitional years put a stress on your overall condition. If you reckon the changes, both fysically and mentally, it is not surprising that you need to be in very good shape to go through this stage without complaints. The therapies I practise are very personalized and request a great deal of communication between patient and practisioner therefor I cannot offer you a one-size-fits-all remedy list for your symptoms. What I can offer you are suggestions acoording to your symptoms, attitude, lifestyle and so on  for shaping up your fysical and mental health, so it will be easier for you to cope. Not every therapy is everybodys cup of tea. Even the right homeopathic remedy may not have the desired result if the patient is a very introvert type or has been treated with hormones like prednison or cortison for a prolonged period of time. Contrary to ‘modern’  medicine ‘alternative’ medicine is not directed at specific fysical symptoms but at the patient as a whole. Starting-point is the unity between body, mind and soul. Especially the homeopathic and Bach flower remedies are used from that point of view. The therapies I use with menopausal patients are besides homeopathy and food supplements: aromatherapy, Bach flower therapy, hydro therapy, herbs, moxa, reflex zone, biochemical salts, shiatsu and a hell of lot of communication. You can take all the remedies you want, but if your digestion and the mucous membranes in your mouth (where in general the homeopathic remedies, the biochemical salts and some of the vitamins are absorbed) are not in A condition, you will get hardly any or no results. So lets start with that; (a lot will be familiar to you, but I do not want to leave anything out) EATING BEHAVIOUR Digestion and with that your overall health is not just influenced by the food you eat but also by you eating pattern. The Japanese say: Eat your drink and drink your food. Here is meant that you have to chew a bite till it has become liquid and the digestive fluids in your mouth can do their job. And that you have to circulate a sip in your mouth till it is mixed with your saliva. Easterners understand that your digestion starts in your mouth and not in your stomach. Do not drink during a meal; the stomach acids will become diluted, wich wil make your food harder to digest. By eating slowly and with attention digesting problems will be minimised. It also keeps from eating too much, because by chewing well the saturation point will sooner be reached. In Western countries malnutrition exists, not because of too little food, but because insufficient intake of the substances during digestion because of a hasty eating behaviour. Digestion gets even more disturbed by irregular eating times, by shifting meals and in–between-meals snacks, while eating because of feelings of anger, anxiety, frustration etc. cause obesity and a disturbed bowel system. If you find yourself reaching for the cooky jar or the refrigerator door, ask yourself: What is it, that I REALLY need right now?   Maybe a phone conversation with your best friend or a walk? Eating habits you can only change by changing your behaviour and attitude, only that will bring you to your desired weight. The only permanent results from diet pills (usually a hidden laxative) are the enriching of the manufacturer and the affecting of your health. Luxury food, like coffee, alcohol, black tea, chocolate and candy will destroy (some of) the effectiveness of vitamins. -Coffee has the substance cafeine (125 mg a cup) that widens the arteries of the heart and can cause palpitations. An overdose of cafeine can cause: headaches, irritability, insomnia, hypertension, digestive problems. Cafeine   obstructs the absorption of calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamin B and C., so do not drink coffee shortly before, during or after meals. Cafeine has also some positive effect on the metabolism, but it increases the need for sweets. – black tea contains cafeine as well (50 mg a cup) but this is obstructed by the presence of adenine. A great intake of tea can lead to insomnia and anxiety. Strong tea contains tannine, that will obstruct the intake of iron. Take real herbal tea instead (make sure it is not black tea with an added flavour) – Cocoa contains harmfull theobromine (similar to cafeine). Use the alternative carob instead. – Alcohol is a silent fattener and it withdraws substances from the body like calcium, magnesium, zinc, wich can lead to a vitamin C and B deficiency. It also obstructs the absorption of glucogen in the livver. -Singular sugars (white sugars) are being quickly absorbed and damaging to health. It can lead to depressions, obesity, diabetes and hypoglycaemia. Sugar cane and honey (less) have the same effect. Safe plural sugars is contained in cereals, vegetables and fruit. A craving for sweets can be satisfied by eating fruits (pineapple is great: contains bromine), currants, raisins (unsulphated) and sweeteners with plural sugars as malted grains, malted rice and malted corn. FUEL FOR OUR BODY Carbohydrates, fats and proteins  are the primary sources of energy . Their fuel potential is expressed in calories. Foods that are high in energy value are high in calories. Fats yield approx. 9 cl./gram and carbos and proteins yield approx. 4 cl/gram Carbohydrates: Carbos are the chief source of energy for all body functions and muscular exertion and are necessary to assit in the digestion and assimilation of other food The carbon unites with oxygen in the blood stream. They help to regulate protein and fat metabolism; fats require carbos for their breakdown in the liver. ( so to ban all carbos from your diet would be a very foolish thing to do.) Principal carbos are sugars (see above), starches and cellulose. Starches require prolonged enzymatic action in order to be broken down for digestion. Cellulose is largely indigestible by humans and contributes very little energy to the diet. However, it provieds the bulk necessary for intestinal action and assists elimination. All sugars and starches are converted by the body to a singular sugar as glucose (blood sugar) or fructose. Some of the blood sugar is used as fuel by tissues of the brain, nervous system and muscles. Some is converted to glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles; the excess is converted to fat and stored throughout the body as a spare source of energy. When those fats are reconverted to glucose and used for body fuel, weight loss results. Carbo snacks containing sugars and starches provide the body with an almost instant energy, because the cause a sudden rise in the blood sugar level. This level drops again rapidly, creating a craving for more sweet food and also fatique, dizziness, nervousness and head ache. Diets high in carbos are usually low in vitamins, minerals and cellulose and can cause vitamin deficiency.  If Vit B is absent, carbo combustion cannot take place and indigestion, heartburn and nausea can result. Research has proven a connection between diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, aneamia, kidney disorders and cancer and an OVERindulgence of refined carbo food. UNDERindulgence produces ketosis, loss of energy, depression and breakdown of essential body protein.
