Hope Chest
Question:
I want to make a 2×3x2 hope chest for my daughter. Never having made one before, I don’t want to dive into a design with no background ideas of design. I don’t want a pattern, necessarily… just options. I have searched almost every WWW woodworking site. This is my last resort for ideas. Thanks for any help! john

Try<http://www.augusthome.com/Click on "Woodworking" then click on project plans. They have plans which you can view and download if you wish. Also<http://www.woodforum.comHas plans for a lidded file box or chest which you could probably adapt to your needs. — C.E."Chuck"Ring Madera Encantada "Enchanted Wood" <http://www.woodworking.com/magazine/jul96/poly/index.html

Grant, Wander by http://www.cableone.net/andya and look at the ash & cedar chest we built for Janis. I _promise_ we still have the sketches and notes and construction photos if you want info on building one like it. Note to those who know what I’m saying… We are still trying to gather the info on the truck center console and the bench saw station. We’re still looking. Andy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have been asked to build a hope chest for a friend’s daughter who is graduating from high school this spring. I am looking at the plans from Rockler. I have a couple of questions. Has anyone used these plans? If so, about how much material did you buy for the project? Thanks, Grant

Very nice! My customer (WOW that sounds good!) doesn’t care for panel type construction. She wants straight sides. Awsome web site! I hope that some day I’ll have some projects worth the disk space!!! I bought what Rockler calls a plan for a crib as the crib FAQ cures insomnia for me. Also bought their crib hardware kit. Both were very short of fullfilling their intended ends! Dear Grant, I have build a large number of boxes (many with hand carving). Hope Chests are usually built from hardwood. The amount depends on the size of the chest which usually are sized to fit at the end of a bed and serve as a bench. Hope Chests are usually ornamented with carving or stenciling. The choice of ornamentation effects the choice of wood. How do you plan to decorate the box? I have a set of plans for a Hope Chest on my Web site (URL below) under Freebies. This design features very simple but attractive carving (one gouge only). I would be happy to send them to you if you like or even adjust it to your needs at no cost. I have made a "treasure Chest"…not exactly the same. I used scrap wood to make it which inlcudes opplar, red and white oak, black walnut for the corners, and maple bungs. I get a lot of compliments on it. I would guess you are going to need about 25 BF. This can easily be calculated by the dimensions they give. (Too early for my brain to work! – working on my first cup) You can use ply for the bottom. You could any wood you want on your hope chest. Perhaps your friend or his daughter has a preference?
