How does antipsycotics work?

Im in a lot off stress I suffer from SP and ruminate alot I just cant stop thinking scary thoughts I have a really hard time to expose my self to the feared situation I feel im in a constant trance that get so bad that im totally gone I feel that things can get worse i have no memory the time perspective is lost everything feels abstract,everything feels so unreal I cant get a hold on things. I just have to get some releaf,how does antypshycotics work do they block? slow down the thoughs? does it make you feel nothing? Anything would be better even to feel nothing at all

You sound as though you are in a high state of anxiety. You need to get to a Doc very quickly so that a proper diagnosis and medication regime can be started. Please dont delay in doing this. Anti psychotics do not act like Valium,Xanax, and other benzodiazepines. They are completely different, and to some-one who is in an agitated state like you are presently, they may be inappropriate, although I have heard some types of major tranquillisers (anti psychotics) being used in small doses for severe anxiety. However, anti-depressants which have a strong anti-anxiety effect and benzos to my experience are the most likely. Please seek treatment. and all the best,..Jason

anti-psychotics effect the frontal lobes of your brain which is the part of the brain controlling emotions and in time ultimately result in chemical lobotomy.

If by SP you mean social phobia, I found the antipsychotic geodon to work miracles for my social phobia. It will also make you more in touch with reality and less "in your head" with all the weird thoughts. It makes you much less withdrawn. They don’t slow down thoughts, they more like change the content of your thoughts from ruminating on scary thoughts, to more normal thoughts about activities and interactions with people. They will get you out of that trance and in to real life. But geodon has side efffects like anxiety and insomnia which really sucks and then you have to take stuff for that. Other antipsychotics don’t have these side effects but weren’t as effective for the social phobia and withdrawal. Sasha

Be careful with the AP’s. I was put on Geodon and had a major episode!!! I did not sleep for about four days was exceptionally paranoid and agitated. I had to be given ativan to calm down and then slept for almost five days. What followed was the most severe period of depression to date. Remember that drugs effect individuals differently. Discuss these possibilities with your physician prior to beginning the medication and make provisions in the event that you have an experience such as mine (i.e. someone who you can call to help you and a number to contact your doctor in the event of an emergency). At the first feeling that you are becoming out of control or beginning to feel uneasy contact your physician and have someone with you to monitor you. My sister had to help me through that episode and had I not had her I am not sure what would have happened. I could not contact her for over an hour because I was so disoriented and shaking that I had trouble remembering her number and then more trouble dialing. Make sure that you can contact someone no matter what!
