I have a question about my medication
Question:
Damn google, I posted this last night and because it has the same title as nother post from frickin 1995 it was posted under that. Here goes again: I had a question. I was put on Celexa just yesterday, and think I’m having some side effects. I took it at about 9 am yesterday morning, and by 1 pm I could feel my anxiety lessen to the point of being able to talk in my 12-12:50 math class. I went to bed at about 12-1 am this morning, and woke up at 6:30, something I have never done in a while, waking up past 7:30 am. I had a weird dream last night, and the minute I woke up I felt kinda unreality (anxiety?) and I immediately sat up and dry heaved several times and my mouth is pretty dry. On the box it says: The most frequent adverse effect reported with CELEXA vs placebo in clinical trial were nausea (21% vs 14%), dry mouth (20% vs 14%), somnolence (18% vs 10%), insomnia (15% vs 14%), increased sweating (11% vs 9%), tremor (8% vs 6%), and ejaculation disorder (6% vs 1%). Now, these side effects seem extremely high to me, so one might think that they don’t last very long i.e. the side effects go away upon continued use of Celexa. I was wondering if this was the case, as on my first day of taking it I have experienced four of the seven. One of my relatives is also on Celexa (but for just anxiety and not depression/anxiety, like me) and he also responded to it within the same day (decrease in anxiety), but had none, not one, of the side effects. Lucky I guess! So my question is, are these side effects that will pass with time? Or should I see my pdoc and tell about this? Thanx. Frost P.S. And talk about a weird dream I had last night? One part I remember is I was showing a guy the bottle of Celexa I was taking. The dude (who was an African-American guy with glasses, kinda like the dude in those gum commercials here in the States) told me I’d be sweating and couldn’t sleep. LOL, is that my anxiety over taking meds talking or what?

When I was taking paxil, it wasn’t uncommon to wake up and puke.

Generally the side-effects lessen (but never entirely go away). You only need to see your pdoc if the symptoms are intolerable or something really strange happens (like you get a really bad rash, or something). Give the meds a week to settle down. And hang around a while – you might like us. :-) Bri — Dum spiro, spero.

snip Hello Frost; welcome to ASD, and make yourself at home. I don’t know anything about ‘Celexa’, but with most anti-depressants the side-effects do wear off after a while. Talk to your doctor if they are no less after a couple of weeks, or if you really can’t put up with them. — — Whiskers

Effexor made me terribly nauseated for several weeks. The effects decreased over time. The first weeks also featured very vivid dreams. I often would wake-up confused because what I had dreamed didn’t seem to match to my memory correctly… which it didn’t ’cause it was a dream. I took several sleeping aids and they all made me sweat awfully… that didn’t go away which is why I tried several.

Anyway, my pdoc says if all goes well (which I pray it will), and I’m a great responder, I only have to be on the Celexa for 1-3 years and then go off the stuff for good. I have read the chance of remission (for depression) is 85%, but what he said has given me hope. <knocks on wood
I am knocking, ok? Alot of times, your body just need time to adjust to the meds. Could be two weeks to a month or bit more. Other times, it is tweeking the dosage – maybe a pill, or a half pill or even split doses. Othertimes, like if it makes you hyper or super sleepy, requires an adjustment in when you took it. At one point my antidepressant was affecting my sleep. So my docs, who some wanted me to split up the dosage while others didn’t care about that, all said to not take it after 6PM so I am more likely to sleep at night. Anyway, a good very general place to look up med information is the treatment page of my Affective Friends site. It has pages for many of the more common meds (and some general treatments like ECT and things like that) which list the side effects and often, how to handle them. Good luck. Thanx for welcoming me and giving me advice. I’m about to go to bed, so I’ll see if I have a vivid dream, wake up feeling bad again, etc. The side effects aren’t noticable during the day, except for upset stomach, and I’m really tired right now, which normally doesn’t happen at 11 pm (of course this could be the Celexa has lessened my anxiety and is allowing my body to operate normally e.g. being tired at a resonable time rather than 2 or 3 am.) One thing I also learned is that Celexa and other SSRIS’s can affect short term memory. I’m a student and this kinda worries me a bit. Is there any clinical or anecdotal evidence to back this up? Anyway, my pdoc says if all goes well (which I pray it will), and I’m a great responder, I only have to be on the Celexa for 1-3 years and then go off the stuff for good.
