Question:
I think a **major** part of how we age is hereditary. My Father had very oily skin, my Mother had moderately dry skin, so I have been blessed with very balanced skin, somehow had the sense to keep my *face* out of the sun while I was baking the rest of me so I have skin which looks *much* younger than that of many women my age (I was quite shocked to see a recent photo of Helen Mirren, who is my age, and very fair, but looks a lot older than I). I also have inherited strong bones from the women on my Father’s side of the family (those on my Mother’s side developed osteo). I have to discipline myself about this, but I keep my weight down. I seem to have also inherited this ability from my Mother, since she was heavy as an adolescent, but very small all her adult life. None of my female blood relatives ever took hormones — they weren’t around then (all of my blood relative cousins are male). In my experience, some of the women who breezed through peri-menopause without much fuss, find themselves now feeling like they are going downhill, which I, having had the crashing fatigue, insomnia and achiness, during peri, feel is just a phase. Only time will tell. I also think attitude is everything as far as aging goes. Cool Runnings, HomemakerJ

*laugh* And I think of myself as such a slug. I think it would be fun to spend the rest of my life redefining things by example so that the words "high energy" and "old age" don’t seem like contradictions. In fact, I think I will … –Pat Kight kig…@peak.org

Not in my experience. Being a nosy sort, I’ve taken lately to asking older women friends (in their 60s and 70s, whether they’ve used HRT and how they feel about it. Some have, some haven’t, some still are. One thing I’ve learned is that I can’t tell by looking. > My friend says she > feels a lot older and feels she looks a lot older since not having periods.
In the normal course of things, "not having periods" is part of aging. And as we age, sooner or later, it shows. How soon, and by how much, probably has more to do with genetics and lifelong habits than anything else. In terms of appearances, the "oldest-looking" women I know, without exception, have either smoked or spent a lot of time out in the sun. But if estrogen was the cause – or the cure – then men wouldn’t "show their age" as much as women do. I certainly haven’t found that to be the case. I still get people telling me I look "young for my age," but I think that’s just because I have a fat face, so the wrinkles don’t show. –Pat Kight kig…@peak.org

Is it true that women age physically more without estrogen. My friend says she feels a lot older and feels she looks a lot older since not having periods.
