Melatoin…
Question:
I have relied on my friendly food co-op supplement specialist (PCC in Seattle) for input on which Melatonin to use. My response has been good. I find that I mostly sleep through the night when using Melatonin and awake more refreshed. I use a CPAP. The level of dosage is an issue. My plan is to consult with a Naturopath on this topic. My MD’s answer to becoming tired during the day is to take Zoloft. I tried this for 25 days, but felt I was having very few high productivity times. Depression had not been a problem, merely tiredness in the early afternoon. In addition to the Melatonin I am now taking L-Tyrosine and a mix of enzymes and nutritional supplements called Deep Thought by Kal. These seem to push back the time when I hit the wall by several hours each day. I’m open to input. Anyone? Please respond to me at JWL…@aol.com. John in Seattle

Hi, John in Seattle, Don’t you love PCC? Have you tried a fitness program? I really shouldn’t be the one to suggest this, because, after 12 years of a wonderful aerobics program, I moved 18 months ago, and I haven’t found a replacement. So I’ve been vegging out for a year and a half. I know what I need: a fun, low impact, high intensity, dancy, aerobics program, within 15 minutes of my house. Have to have peer pressure, have to have a schedule, have to have fun. Haven’t found it yet, but I’m looking. However, I know that when I was exercising religiously three times a week, plus usually something active on weekends, I was always full of energy and never sagged during the day. I am a firm believer that building up a modest level of muscle strength and endurance and cardiovascular fitness prevents or eliminates a lot of problems, from back problems to fatigue to poor sleep to constipation to who knows what else. The trick is to find something you enjoy doing several times a week. A friend has just started taking salsa dance lessons. That sounds like fun and good exercise! Maybe I’ll try scheduling my husband and I for an active vacation, say, next fall — a bicycle tour of Province, say. Or "need to look good in bathing suit by next Christmas in Hawaii". Buy the tickets now. Then we’ll have to get in shape! Sally in Seattle

Hi, MB, >Since melatonin is not FDA regulated…it’s difficult to tell if what >you’re buying is "real" thing. Does anyone know which of the various >drug/nutritionstores are selling "real" synthetic melatonin. For >instance, I know GNC , but is this the real thing? How can one determine >if it is?
You can’t, which is a major problem with melatonin as things stand. I recently researched sources for an article I was writing, and about all I could find out was that virtually all of it is synthetic, manufactured primarily in Europe and Japan. You just have to hope it’s good stuff. There is no oversight by anyone except the manufacturers. Sally in Seattle JSo…@aol.com

After the Newsweek article on melatonin appeared on August 7th several people rushed out to the local health food stores to check out the prices and do some comparisons. Low and behold there was even a few bottles of "so called" melatonin there with 5 mg for only $10.00 or less. The next logical question was, wait a minute, here is melatonin for $10 and 5 mg and Life Plus is selling Somniset with 1.5 mg of melatonin for $19.00. Now as my friend Paul Harvey says here comes the "rest of the story". First let’s make this clear. The article for newsweek by Geoffrey Cowley was sent to Life Plus by the way to see if they had any problems with the findings before it was published. Why? Because Life Plus has been manufacturing products for almost 60 years and is well known in the industry as the leader in natural products. If you’ll read the fine print it says that Melatonin’s benefits are still debatable, but studies point to many possible uses. It is still not know what the effects of taking this product will be 5 or 10 years down the road. Life Plus has always been very cautious in their approach to products. More doesn’t always mean better. Take for instance our colloidal silver product. Life Plus has only 5 ppm. Now there are other companies out there bragging about that they have 20 ppm. Do you realize that recent studies have shown that over 5 ppm of this product actually has resulted in peoples skin turning a "permanent" bluish color (yep a smurf). With Somniset Life Plus has chosen to be very careful and use the minimum amount required to produce the desired results. What you won’t find in those other melatonin bottles on the shelf is all the other products that Life Plus puts into their product to make it work three times as strong as a bottle with 5 mg. Not only does Somniset contain melatonin but it contains the essential concentrated tissue nutrients, from the brain, hypothalamus and pituitary. Factor in the amino acids, L-Glutamine, L-Glutamic acid, L-Tyrosine, and herbs such as valerian root, hops, passion flower, chamomile, and minerals such as calcium lactate, Magnesium Gluconate, and zinc picolinate. Add to that Life Plus’s patented PhytoZyme Base for bioavailability and synergistic co-factors and folks it’s like comparing a yugo to a cadillac. What you are getting for your $10 from the health food store is a product that lord only knows where it was manufactured, how it was manufactured and how it is really absorbed into the body. With Life Plus you can hop in an airplane fly to Little Rock Arkansas, rent a car and drive out to Batesville Arkansas and put on your white coat, put on a mask and walk into the factory and see how, and where this product is made, run your hands through the raw material and realize that this isn’t even a contest. But the real proof of the pudding is that this product works. We’ve got testimonials of people with incredible insomnia problems that are now sleeping like babies. Does your health food store give you an unconditional money back 30 day guarantee on their product? If you try our product and it doesn’t work for you, you’ll get your money back, so far I’ve never heard of one bottle being sent back. Once you try the Life Plus Somniset you’ll see that what you are getting isn’t just "melatonin", it’s truly in a league of it’s own. Dr Sahelian who was featured in Newsweek, and on Good Morning America and A Current Affair, was so impressed with the bottle of Sominiset that I sent him that he gave it to the "Current Affair" producer to show on the show. If you want to put just any old product into your body, a product you have no real idea what is in it, or where it is manufactured and you don’t worry about the possible long term effects then by all means run down to the local health food store and buy that $10.00 bottle of ahem "melatonin". If you care about what goes into your body and want a product that will work as advertised or you’ll get a refund of your money, and you can feel secure knowing it’s manufactured by a company right here in the United States, a company that has been manufacturing products for 60 years for doctors and health care professionals then you only have one choice.
