Melatonin followup

Question:

It can be dangerous to take more than 3 mg. of Melatonin, said dr. Weil as we don’t know what it does in the brain, like maybe it causes brain cancer.

Response:

It was recently suggested that I increase mt trial dosage of melatonin   at bedtime to see if it would 1) help in combatting insomnia and 2)   affect my BG in any way.     Two weeks ago I increased the nightly dosage from 1mg to 6mg. So far it   has neither helped re insomnia nor affected my BG.  I’ve looked at melatonin. I noticed that the label warned that it  should not be used by people with auto-immune diseases. I decided  to put it back.   Back to the old drawing board….(which now includes another trial of   St. John’s Wort and one of Valerian Root).  I don’t know Valerian Root, but I’ve read that St. John’s Wort works  in a similiar way as Prozac. It can take weeks to have any effect, if  it does have any effect.  I’d be very careful with the OTC and herbal stuff. These can be far  more complicated then perscription drugs, and we know much less about  interactions, safe doses, long and even short term side effects. Plus  the production process and labeling regulations are much less strict.  I have always wondered why melatonin has been available OTC. No other  hormone is: Insulin, Synthroid, birth control pills, EPO, testosterone,  etc.

My mom uses Valerian Root to help her sleep better.  She still wakes up as much in the night but goes back to sleep much faster. Joanne A Very Happy Pumper for 7 1/2 Weeks!

melatonin helps me sleep more soundly but does not induce sleep 1mg at bedtime and I feel rested after 6 hrs sleep w/o, 8 hours ain’t enough this is a chemical that is produced in humans to sleep as we get older, we produce less and our levels drop and we sleep more fitfully. So I guess I have reached that OLD plateau cause it sure helps me Doug

Response:

I take one meatonin of 5mg and 5mg of trazelmain(sp) I sleep very well but I got to take both around 9PM so that by 6:30AM I can wake up fresh and revived. some times I still have insomnia after thoes pills will have doctor give me stronger prescription next time. So isn’t St Johns wort like prozac an antidepressant to make you happy and not want to sleep. or am I wrong and the stuff makes you forget about all of lifes problems and you can go to sleep OK. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It was recently suggested that I increase mt trial dosage of melatonin at bedtime to see if it would 1) help in combatting insomnia and 2) affect my BG in any way.
