"Must Do's" in Hong Kong
Question:
Try the HK tourist Assoc. site: www.hkta.org. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi. I’, taking a 3 week tour through China May 12-June. We finish in Hong Kong, but don’t spend much time there. I am able to spend 2 full days (3 nights) extra at the end of my tour. What would you recommend are the most worthwhile things to do and see (when you only have 2 days). Thanks Heather

being a HKer.. I must say I nearly entirely agree with Richards comments.. although.. I’m not so sure about going to Guanzhou.. as you are going to china anyway, right?? Peninsula afternoon tea is great.. but in my opnion, I think Mandarin Oriental’s High Tea (in Central) is better in standard — go b4 4:00 cos of the long queue. Regent’s cafe in TST Kowloon have a great view of the harbour plus piano. If you like shopping, Stanley is a good place.. but it is definitely not HKD10 taxi ride.. more like USD 10. one can take the bus from the exchange square bus terminal for about 10HK. No 6. I think. there are also express service Shopping in the ‘women’s street’ at night is also a great attraction… it is in Mongkok. (along MTR) Of course do some shopping for electronics/computers… NEVER buy in Tsim sha tsui. try Mongkok.. (it is a very crowded place even at 10pm) ask for the computer arcade. in Nelson street. also one in Wanchai… a less crowded computer shopping centre and Definitely Party in Lan Kwai Fong. the bar Insomnia have live music till at least 4am… (I’ve never stayed there till it close) and actually.. apart from trying Cantonese food. Try peiking food. — peiking duck is an experience. also try Shanghainese food. really good. other asian food are also of very high standard in HK. the local ones are always better than the hyped up westen ones. Thai and Vietnamese food is great if you like spicy food….. And a last must do… try to take a few ’sticker photos’.. it is one of the greatest hypes in HK. orginating from Japan. 30HK per sheet……

I suggest the following: 1.) Afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel. (Don’t wear sneakers, tank-tops or short shorts.) 2.) Shopping in Stanley Market (a $10 taxi ride from Central). While some will argue that it’s all touristy junk, I disagree. Paw through the racks of silk clothing, and you’ll discover some great things. I can do my entire Christmas shopping there with $50 in two hours. Plus, it’s a great way to see the other side of Hong Kong Island. 3.) A night of partying in Lan Kwai Fung (spelling may be off, but I’m sure I’ll be corrected). 4.) The Star Ferry. Do it both at night and during the day — two different experiences. 5.) Victoria Peak. Touristy, but worthwhile for a first-time visitor. 6.) Riding on the top of a street car on Hong Kong Island. 7.) Dim Sum. 8.) Time-permitting, take a one-day tour to Guangzhou in the People’s Republic of China. The train takes about 1 1/2 hours, and with a tour, you don’t have to get a Chinese visa. Many local tour operators offer one-day trips. Well worth a day. 9.) A half-day in Macau. It’s not nearly as pleasant as Hong Kong, but it is interesting nonetheless. Do this only if you run out of time in Hong Kong/Guangzhou. 10.) Dinner at any of the well-recommended Cantonese restaurants. Go with as many people as possible and have fun. Cheers, Richard
