New e-mail address reminder

Question:

<SNIP I just got an email informing me that my phone number does not "meet the test specs" for ADSL. Damn I was so looking fordard to that.

<SNIP Keep trying…not all of the CO’s are upgraded to handle it yet.  If you’re within a certain distance (over the wire) of a CO once it’s got the necessary equipment, your in.  If not, the wait is longer while they boost the signal out away from the CO. I tried once a month for about six months before they accepted my number.  I was the second in my city to get service, which may explain the frequency of problems I enjoy (but not the lousy support!). Also, check with your cable company.  They may already have service in your area. -Ed G

Yeah, well, *my* Bell telco told me more than a half dozen times that I was "more than 14,000 feet" from the CO that served my telephone numbers, and they did that for nearly a year. COVAD told me I was approximately 6500 feet away from the CO that served my telephone numbers and told me where the CO was located. COVAD was right. *AFTER* I started up the procedures with COVAD and it started its procedures with the telco, I got an EMAIL from the telco telling me that ADSL was going to be possible from them VERY SOON NOW at my location. And it doesn’t rain in Indianapolis in the summertime… I went with COVAD and its ISP reseller. It offered a higher level of service at about the same price, too. SDSL instead of ADSL. — Harry Krause She’s nuttier than a squirrel’s breakfast!

Response:

If your wiring coming into the house is too old, it’s the "wrong" kind…and requires some very expensive upgrading to use ADSL.  First question they asked me was, "how old is your house?" Peggie

Peggie, I have one question. Just how did you manage to get att to cancel your account? I have an account with them at home and I’m beginning to think that I’ll have to cancel my credit card to get them to go away. — Joseph M Tyson Bellport, Long Island

Response:

Joseph, I had a similar problem with ATT.  I finally sent their customer service dept an email stating that I would no longer accept any charges from ATT and then sent a copy of the email along with my next statement. I only had to disallow the charge one time.  It is so time consuming to follow up on a disallowed charge they figured it was worth it to just cancel my account. I think it depends on the person you get on the other end of the line. I recently changed from one AT&T billing plan on my cell phone to another and, at the same time, I changed credit cards for the monthly bill. The first change was implemented in 24 hours and the second took effect with the next bill. Maybe the folks that handle changes at AT&T’s ISP aren’t as swift, or perhaps their systems are pooched. BTW, Belle of the South has one of the highest rated ISP’s…though I’m not sure what was involved in the ratings. I don’t ask much from an ISP…just signal, basically, and a decent ass’t of newsgroups and EMAIL that works. — Harry Krause Insomnia is nothing to lose sleep over.

Which is exactly what I did at the Annapolis shows! :-) Ah well…hopefully they’ll find me… Actually, I didn’t intend to cancel the att.worldnet account as of yesterday…I wanted to make it the end of this billing cycle. But I could never get loose from the automated menu to talk to a real live person to tell ‘em that…I kept going to the next menu choice trying to find one that offered that opportunity till I got to one that said "your account has been cancelled." You don’t ask the postpeople to keep forwarding mail to your new address after they stop getting paid, though. Hey, I just noticed that this is crossposted to rec.boats.building, and they are kind of sensitive to drawn-out threads encroaching from other groups. Followups set.

Amen to all of that.  When it works it’s great.  The exta speed makes it hurt that much more when it goes away, which with BellSouth has proven to be quite often! I "piggybacked" it onto my fax line, with the idea that I’d be able to get rid of the dedicated modem line in the office.  But as long as I still have to use dial-up about once a week (according to a couple of friends, their servers go down even more often), I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

That would be me! More so than the loss of service, I get extremely frustrated with their inability to support the service.  In the most recent incident, when the service went down again a few days ago, I sent note to let them know I wasn’t happy and asked for someone to contact me to discuss.  No reply whatsoever.  Not very professional. Now that you’re signed up, some things to keep in mind and be prepared for: When you call for ADSL support, make sure you call the ADSL support number.  If you call the normal BellSouth.net number, can be transferred to ADSL support, but will stand a good chance of being disconnected in the process. Once you get into the correct queue and the obligitory excessive hold time passes (usually 10-15 minutes, but sometimes more) you will eventually get to a human support rep employed by a third party support company.  This individual will be friendly and interested in helping, but dispite their best efforts will only be able to confirm (but not always) their is a problem. The source of the problem will be a system upgrade taking place (during the day?) due to the overwhelming response and success of the ADSL program. (isn’t it exciting?).  Unfortunately, there will be no estimated time for service restoration available. When the system is down, occasionally cycle (turn off then back on) your modem.  When the system comes back up, the modem often has to be reset.  Since there is no way to know when the system is back up, it’s best to reset occasionally and check it.  I lost an additional day once waiting for the service to come back only to call support and be told it had been back up all along. Yes, I’m looking for an alternative vendor…. Good luck, -Ed G

It’s not too late to sign up now.  That way, when you give your clients your new address, it will be the last address you will have to give them.  It won’t (if I was unclear) forward mail from a "dead" address, such as the one you cancelled, though.  But if you sign up for a free portable email address, the next time you cancel your ISP, it won’t matter. Suppose you sign up with Bellsouth, and your new email address is directed (just as you configured it to do) to your tired of Bellsouth and switch to someone else, say prodigy, you just reconfigure your forwarding service to send mail to your new address, But, the slick thing is, the address you give out to friends and week, and keep the same emial address.   I’m not connected with any of these companies, even though it sounds like it.  I just know what a pain in the rear it can be to switch ISP’s knowing that you have given out 400 business cards with a now invalid email address.  It will never happen to me again!!!!
