NutraSweet/PKU

Question:

All of the medical jargon aside… I know I’m allergic to NutraSweet.  If I eat the smallest amount I break out in hives, other skin rashes and have from a mild to sever case of diarreah with severe intestinal cramping.  The severity depends upon how much I have ingested. Funny… I never had these reactions to saccrine, go figure it. from Dr. Atkin’s Health Revelations – April 1994 "A Six-Pack of soda’s recipe for retardation      Scientists in the field consider the amino acid phenylalanine, when ingested as an amino acid separate from others in a protein-containing food, to be dangerous to human health.      When you ingest a protein food, as Dr. Timothy Maher and Dr. Richard Wurtman (of MIT) point out, your brain’s levels of phenylalanine do not rise because the other amino acids present compete for admission.  When competing amino acids aren’t present in sufficient amounts or are absent entirely, such as when you eat a food laden with aspartame, your brain’s phenylalanine level rises drastically.      Labels of aspartame-containing products must carry a warning at least to people who have PKU.  The people’s bodies lack an enzyme that breaks down phenylalanine.  When adults with PKU ingest a large amount of phenylalanine, they can suffer brain damage; children with the condition can become mentally retarded.      Rising phenylalanine levels radically affect chemicals your brain needs to function properly.  That may have a good deal to do with aspartame’s ability to cause headaches and seizures.      Certainly its effect of lowering the level of serotonin, one of the brain’s neurotransmitting chemicals, increases your susceptiblity to depression.  This ties in with a 1993 study of clinically depressed people.  As published in Biological Psychiatry, Ralph Walton and his associates at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine found that high doses of aspartame caused most of the depressed people to experience nauseau, headache, increased depression, forgetfulness, nervousness and insomnia.     The non-depressed patients did not show these reactions, which suggests that being depressed increases the likelihood of an aspartame reaction.     In fact, the side effects were so severe that the hospital’s internal review board abruptly halted the study after only eight patients were studied.  While absolutely necessary to uphold patients’ rights, this sort of human decency by the Ohio scientists unfortunately enables the NutraSweet Co. to say that "no statistically significant adverse effects" from aspartame use have ever been published." ——————-==== Posted via Deja News ====———————–       http://www.dejanews.com/     Search, Read, Post to Usenet
