OCD on CBS's "48 Hrs." TONIGHT
Question:
It is at 10 p.m. in California… 7:00 p.m. on the East Coast. Hope it is realistic and positive, and maybe, just maybe some help to all of us. Cheers, Allison

Naw, the boy in the bathroom was too extreme.

Did someone here say low levels of melatonin in the brain could be cause (or was it effect?) of OCD? Just received in mail a promotional flyer offering 30 tabs of melatonin, 3 mg. at $.89, limit six bottles. Noncomittal ad for this item just says, "It’s in the News! You’ve read about it! You’ve seen it on TV!" Can anyone say whether this a home remedy for OCD? Or have I confused this with that which causes tanning? Jim

No, that is for sleep. Kinda nice way to get to sleep.
Response:
Yes, thanks, Scott, it’s seratonin! Boy, was I confused! At the barber’s today I learned that melatonin is being touted as an aid to getting enough sleep. But someone said it gave them long hours of sleep filled with horrible dreams. Not a very good tradeoff. Then someone said, "Just take charge of your dreams–insist they be pleasant ones, like winning the lottery or finding the perfect love." If our waking hours were only so simple! Jim

Melatonin is a chemical in the brain which puts you to sleep. You can get melatonin tablets which are natural and help if you have insomnia. They worked really well for me. I don’t think they have any effect on OCD and they won’t help you get a tan, that’s melanin =) Serotonin is the culprit chemical I think you’ve confused it with. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Scott C. wrote: > x-no-archive: yes > Hi James, > I’ve never read of any connection between melatonin and OCD, either > as a cause or treatment.
