Off the Wellbutrin on to Zoloft
Question:

Sadly, my optimisim is waning today–don’t have the Zoloft yet, it comes UPS–but I just had a shitty day so it was great to read your post. I’m looking forward to better days :O} little bear Hey Little Bear! Just wanted to give you my encouragement and thumbs up to Zoloft! I have been on 50mg’s for the past 5 years now; and I couldn’t be happier with it! You’re starting on the lowest possible dose, so please don’t get discouraged if you do not feel results immediately! You should change doctors asap. It’s bad when a doctor doesn’t know that Wellbutrin often exacerbates anxiety but it’s a bloody shame when he doesn’t listen to his patients and ignores their observations. Philip
Are you kidding? I finally dropped his butt hard. He was in the same practice with the psychologist I was seeing, which is the only reason I think I put up with him for so long. Finally I pulled myself off the W, and told my psychologist the whole story. Boy he was pretty pissed and I’m guessing that he had a few words with our lovely Dr Duck. Actually, I think I heard that my psychologist left that practice and went back out on his own. Roo

Hi, I started on 25mg Zoloft and stood on it for 28 days, then 6 days at 37.5mg, and now I am on my 34th day at 50mg. My depression has stabilized a lot at 50mg and I had few side effects while weaning on Zoloft the way I did it, mostly drowiness and hightened anxiety. I take the med around 6 AM and am drowsy for about 3-5 hours and then it goes away. I can take up to 3 .75mg Xanax a day but am getting along at an average of 2 a day. YMMV of course. Also, I was not weaning off of any other AD but from prior experience with AD’s I decided to wean on Zoloft the way I did to help prevent side effects. Gene in New Jersey

Hi Philip, My doc did tell me the dose, but then told me to break the tab in 1/2 and take it once in the morning–I just forgot what the dose is; it will be dlvrd here tomorrow and I can get started. I thought (or at least my doc thought) that 2.5mgs of xanax daily was the max reccommended dose so that’s why I was freaking out about using it all and feeling like I could use more. Thanks for the info–but just one more question–in the unlikely event I ‘do’ have withdrawal to the W, should I take the wean dose in the am or pm?
I can’t imagine such a situation but just in case….I don’t think it will make much difference, I wouldn’t take it in the evening because of possible insomnia. little bear–who is STILL optimistic about the rest of my life!!!
Great! And with good reason, I’d say. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Guys, My Doc called this am and I explained that after ten weeks of Wellbutrin, I had a pretty good idea it wasn’t for me due the heightened anxiety. He was not pleased that I was up from .75mgs xanax daily to 2.5mgs–max suggested dose (and feeling like I could use more). We discussed a few options and he mentioned Paxil and for some reason my mind and all that I gathered from this NG went south when he asked if I had an opinion. Finally, after a short discussion about the way anxiety manifests itself in my body and mind, he suggested Zoloft. I am to start with 1/2 pill per day–sorry, don’t know the dose. Additionally, so as not to have discomfort with the withdrawal from the W, I am to take half of what I have been taking. In other words, one 150mg in morning, and nothing in evening. I was at 300mgs daily. Doc said to do this for up to a week, then just the Zoloft and call in two weeks (assuming I don’t have a horrible reaction before then. Does this sound reasonable????? Just wondering if anyone out there who knows me thinks this is a good direction to start in since the W was a right) Thanks in advance! little bear–who is feeling optimistic today :O) I think it is quite possible to wean off Wellbutrin ratxher quickly while slowly weaning onto Zoloft. I don’t think there will be any negative consequences from stopping Wellbutrin as you had them while taking it. Changing to Zoloft will be a change for the better, I hope. Statistically it is, anyway. It *is* important to know what the dose of 1/2 pill is. It would be best if the pill were 25 mg so that you would start at 12,5 mgs. 2.5 mgs of Xanax is a normal dose, well within average therapeutic range. Philip

Hi Little bear, It is important to know the dose of Zoloft
I would start no higher than 12.5mgs, and stay at that dose one week before increasing to 25mgs. Do all your increases in 12.5mg increments and stay at each increase for one week. Give it 6 to 8 weeks to kick in. And use your Xanax as needed during the weaning process. This is not the time to worry about your Xanax dose
I don`t see a problem with weaning off the Wellbutrin while weaning on the Zoloft. It should take but a few days to get off the Wellbutrin. You have alot to be optimistic about!! I wish you luck with Zoloft. {{{{Little bear}}}} Jackie

Hi Dan, Like you say, different strokes. Hope this is the right one for me-I’m too impatient to try a new med every two months (and don’t particularly want to put up with any discomfort while playing wait and see). I just wanted to mention that my doc would be happy if I used the xanax the way you do…..as it is I need it every 4hrs during waking hours–bummer huh–and like I already said, before the W, I was skipping a day here and there so would be happy if the zoloft took care of the chronic anxiety and I had xanax available for emergencies (as it were :0) little bear – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I like zoloft, but it is the only med. that I have been prescribed other than xanax. I recently talked to a person on the net that told me she started with zoloft and was switched to the med. you mentioned–wellbutrin. So– who knows. Guess different strokes–etc. But one thing I see in common is a doctor’s desire to try and cut back on the doses of xanax. For me, I go a couple days –then seem to HAVE to have the xanax again for sleep and to calm my nerves again. Of course, I know that a big portion of my problem is WAITING for the government (OPM) to release me from my stressfull job. Take care and good luch with the Zoloft. It seems to take a while to kick in. Dan
