OT: Civilization (PC game)

Question:

It seems so new and fresh even when you replay it. It’s the one game that both DH and I will relply when asked when we are coming to bed or to dinner "After one more turn…"  Which really translates to "When I finish building the Wonder of the World I’m working on, or when I destroy the — civilization."

Hmmm….guess this hits all of us in one way or another…just one more turn, just one more stitch… :-) -Liz Herman (playing civ2 too much lately for exactly the same reason :-)

Helen Big time Civ II player here.  I seem to go in fits and starts with it (like with my stitching).  I’ll get obsessed with one or the other and do little else.  Then as quickly as the obsession set in, I’ll get bored and not touch it for a while until the next swing of the pendulum. You mentioned Civilization – is it Civ I or II you play? Gord

DH plays both Civ I and II.  He gets stuck in the world and refuses to come out even to eat sometimes.  A 3 day winter weekend will usually see him off to conquer the world yet again.  I pull my stitching chair up close and watch for a while until he gets tired of answering my questions like Why don’t you negotiate with them or Why don’t you build this instead of that. It is highly addictive.  When he goes away for several days at a time, I sneak in a few hours myself. Cheers, Anita

Response:

Erm… I don’t mean to change the subject here, but just to change the I’m obsessing on Minesweeper! Yes, the one that comes with Windows. I can do the three levels in 4 seconds, 25 seconds and 146 seconds respectively, but keep trying to do better. DH even uninstalled the program on me because he felt that I was neglecting him for it!  (But I’ve tucked it away in my WIN Stitch folder and called it Stitcher.exe, so he’ll never find it again!) Hahahahahahahahaahhahahaaaaaaaaa…… Trish {|:-} PS Other games I have been obsessive with: Tetris (all-time favourite – have scored 230,000) Pipe Dream (forget my high score) an ancient Apple II game called Aztec (Indiana Jones theme – similar to Super Mario in ‘feel’) shareware games called Solarian II, Stained Glass and Same Game – all strategy/thinking games. You might guess, I’m a game-playing *maniac*! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Are there any other stitching Civilization players out there? - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Helen, My son received a game for Christmas which "unfortunately" would not work on our old computer so it had to be installed on my designing one! Of course I had to try it out and found it also to be addictive. It sounds a bit similar to Civilisation as you start on a deserted island and "Settle" on it. The game is called Settlers and is very good. I have to limit myself to an hour or so otherwise the whole day could pass in an instant! Have fun! — Carol Leather A British stitcher and designer (and Settler)

I’ve been addicted to this one for a couple of years now. I usually stitch while the Settlers are settling. Sigrid

We should start a support group!  I thought I was the only one NOT getting any stitching done!  Just when I had gotten sick of CIV and was stitching again, DH bought me CIV II.  Curses! Melissa

It’s too bad they don’t offer Civ. as a on-line game, it would be great to have someone to chat with while the settlers are settling. Karen F

ROTFL!  Now if only I could get those hoards of barbarians to do my frogging for me on my stitching… I’d be in heaven!         Jennifer Aikman-Smith, Dragon Dreams Inc who doesn’t play her Mac version too often since it gets in the way of making up new dragons!

I actually do both (stitch and Civ/SimCity) at the same time.  I cross-stitch in front of the computer, and put my stitching down for riots, rebellions, and other nuisances. :) Karen

Response:

But they are. I saw it on the civ page at the software company that makes it. I can’t recall the name since I’m at work. :) -Margaret

Civilization came with my new computer..haven’t played in a while but I am a recovering addict.  Just a question…is there actually a way to win or are you supposed to just try for a higher score..I always got retired before any kind of final event. Karen F.

The way to "win" is to rule the world, although being the first to establish a colony on another world also finishes the game.  I can’t recall what the highest score possible is, but my best is 114% (without cheating!).  Still working on it… Civilization came with my new computer..haven’t played in a while but I am a recovering addict.  Just a question…is there actually a way to win or are you supposed to just try for a higher score..I always got retired before any kind of final event. Yes!  DH loves Civilization, and it has been an "oldy" but goody!  He also has Age of Empires, (very similar) but pulls out Civ to play every now and then.  (Like most of this weekend!)  Can’t complain thought, gives me lots of time to stitch.  LOL! Dear Helen, I started playing Civilization 5 years ago (the first version) when pregnant with my first child and suffering from insomnia.  Both DH and I are Civ fanatics.  I now have CivII and can win on all levels except Deity.  Love it, and even after several months of not playing, will start a new game.  It seems so new and fresh even when you replay it. Agh, me too!  If it’s not Diablo on our PlayStation (2-player with DH and I), Civilization on my PC has to be the most addictive game I’ve played!  I hadn’t played it in forever, but now…? :) – Denise — http://www.mcs.net/~dvoskuil/ If you’re posting to the group, please don’t send me a cc: too X/USA/H+/-/5f/3B/Dreamer (Mirabilia)/XRK/28E/D/:-P~/0/M/B/b/R-/S/ Kc/E/S/G/W-/-/-/Chow Yun-Fat, Bruce Campbell/varies/pizza

I am so addicted.  I can waste hours without even realizing it. I had to take it off the computer earlier this month so I would study more and play less.  I am also seriously addicted to RPGs (role playing games).  I can hear the playstation and Final Fantasy 7 calling to me…     Heather (who is thinking about studying, but…)

Definitely been there.  But it’s not as much fun when you know all the cheats :-)  But, I’ve won at all but the toughest level, so I was definitely addicted for a while <vbg I’ve been distracted from my stitching of late by Civilization.  In the past I have had periods when I’ve been fixated with jigsaws.  I think it’s the need to make patterns.  Stitching on a blank piece of fabric and jigsaws obviously satisfy that and Civilization is a game where you start out with a blank slate and discover the world and develop a civilization with cities, a military base and technology.   Are there any other stitching Civilization players out there? Helen,     I haven’t played Civilization but was addicted to SimCity for awhile. I’m an avid gamer, even play ADD&D every Saturday night with a group of other non grownups. :)     Maybe I had better pick up a copy of Civilization on your recommendation. i used to get addicted to SimCity2000 for the same reason. You build cities from the ground up, or underground i should say since the water lines are underground. But I think I just get addicted to computer games in general because I always have one that DH and I stay up late to play. The current ones are Lords of the Realm II where you defend your properties, feed your animals and pheasants, grow your crops, etc and fight battles to defend or take over properties. You ought to try it out!
