Paxil withdrawl and dizziness???

Yes, Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore. What you are describing is classic SSRI discontinuation syndrome. I recommend your continue your Paxil starting immediately. If you really wish to discontinue your medication, you need to discuss a tapering plan with your physician. It’s misfortunate, but physicians often do not warn their patients that abruptly discontinuing an SSRI has some very nasty side effects: dizziness, nauseau, tingling in the arms, flushing, depression, gi track problems, diarrhea to name a few. It’s moments like this I have to point out that I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on T.V. That said, I stand by what I said: talk to your doctor and go back on your meds. C/

There’s a ton of extraneous stuff there but the core info for his problem is there at: http://www.socialaudit.org.uk/9425prx.htm The potential side effects of the cold turkey approach are very scary. George Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

HI, My son took Luvox and Ritalin for about a year. At first I thought I saw some nice results, but after time I decided any benefits from the ritalin weren’t worth having him on one more medicine. Hello Johnathan, My name is Kaysen Bala. I am a third year pharmacy student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I recently did some research on Paxil and found that in both in the short- and long-term use and is not associated with dependence or addiction. The class of drugs called benzodiazepines (which are used to treat certain anxiety disorders) has been associated with physical dependence in some patients. Paxil does not belong to this class of drugs. Therefore, the problem in not withdrawal. The problem may be due to the fact that you stopped taking the medication very abruptly. Paxil is drug that should be tapered off, meaning that when your doctor feels that you should be taken off Paxil, he would develop a schedule that would allow you to gradually stop taking the medication. It may also be that you still need to be on Paxil for a longer periold of time. It is good that you have scheduled to see your therapist. But until your appointment date which is three weeks away, I would advise you to continue to take Paxil ask prescribed by your doctor. Also I would encourage you to think positively and be in contact with you family and peers as much as possible. Here are some web sites that my provide you with more information: http://www.paxil.com/ocd/index.htm, http://www.paxil.com, http://www.conductdisorders.com. I hope I have provided some helpful information and I hope you feel better. Take care, Kaysen Bala Pharm D. I hope you have done exactly these people have said. If you can’t make an appointment better get someone who can help you. You probably could e-mail someone here your phone number to let them call you and discuss getting you help. I never heard of this SSRI withdrawal issue and it does sound very serious. Have not posted here for a while…. Anyway, I deal with both "low grade" ADD and OCD. With ADD, I’m always thinking, quick witted, sharp, creative, antsy, I could go on, but I won’t. With OCD, I seem to "worry" about the dumb stuff; perfect facial hair, my posture, my walk, skin, nails, teeth, a lot of body image stuff. I also worry about others feelings more than I worry about my own. For example, "Are they upset??", "What do they think about me?". Basically, it’s hard for me to exist, a lot of effort is needed for me to be "normal". After several years, that can get to you. And, when normal stresses approach, they are compounded by my "personal" stresses. OK, I did take Luvox a couple years ago for almost two years. I think it worked, it dulled me, which was OK, but it made me TOO SLEEPY. Got off Luvox for a while. Moved out of the state, felt "off" again, got back on Luvox, again too sleepy, but it did help, I guess. Switch to Zoloft, did not like it, made me tired and sweaty. Doc thought that Ritalin might work for me, coffee seemed to smooth me out and make feel OK. The Ritalin actually works, helps me relax a bit and allows me to focus. However, lately these stupid thoughts keep entering my mind. Yeah, I can focus, but only on myself. I can’t focus on a movie, magazine, or book. Choosing what to eat has become a mental ordeal. Also, the gym, to go or not to go? Body image stuff too. Might have some effect, but I’ve had some financial problems as of late, also in the middle of a job search. Maybe extra stress will flare up my OCD/ADD. I’m very low right now, financially and emotionally. In closing, I’m focused, but on things I wish not to focus on. And I ask, would a combo of Ritalin and Luvox be possible or appropriate?? Is this common?? And does it work?? Thanks. BS
Response:
Jon, have you started taking your paxil again??? Why don’t you take it as ordered and if the symptoms go away by 10 days or so, that pretty much answers your question. Jonna

CALL YOUR THERAPIST IMMEDIATELY!!! USE HIS EMERGENCY NUMBER IF YOU CAN’T GET THROUGH!!! Rapid changes in seratonin can have very serious consequences. Severe anxiety attacks, even worse than the one you are describing, are just one of the potential problems. You have made a big time mistake in stopping the way you did!!! You need a doctor who specializes in these medications to help you immediately!!! hey Jonathan. From what I’ve learned, what you’re experiencing is common, but definitely needs to be brought to a doctor’s attention. Like other similar drugs, Paxil may cause certain symptoms if stopped abruptly. Discontinuation symptoms, if they occur, usually start 1-4 days after stopping Paxil. However, some people may experience the symptoms immediately. The symptoms of withdrawal include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, insomnia, nausea and vomiting, unusual weakness, confusion, or visual disturbances. I think it’s best for you to give your doctor a call. You may need to taper your drug therapy, in other words, slowly decrease over a period of time. Here are some sites you can check out: http://www.paxil.com http://www.medicinenet.com I hope the information I suggested will be helpful to you, but I cannot make any guarantees as to its accuracy, completeness, usefulness, or relevance to your particular situation.
