p/f and redux
Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am new here. This Thursday (09-05-96) I start taking Redux and p/f both and vitamin B12 shots. I take the redux twice a day and I’m not sure about the p/f the the B12 shot at least once a month. My doctor was also concerned about my high blood pressure. He must have taken 10 times during my initial visit, but he decided it was not high enough to keep me from taking the meds. I read in my brochures that the meds cause insomnia. Has anyone experienced this? I am more concerned about this than anything because I have always had a problem with insomnia. Also I read it causes dry mouth and diarrhea, has anyone had to deal with this? Any advice anyone has I would love to hear. Thanks. Angie
Phenetermine is a mild stimulant and may cause insomnia if taken late in the day. You want to take this in the morning. Fenfluramine, OTOH, will make you drowsy and unfocused at first so you want to take this one LATE in the day, after dinner It’s odd that he would put you on Redux AND p/f because the ‘fluramine" part of p/f is just a dilute version of Redux. High blood pressure is a real problem with with these diet meds and patients should be monitored regularly, at least twice a week. I get mine checked 3 times a week. However, some patients, like me, report that their BP DECREASED after starting the program. — "Networks are God’s way of saying that you were getting too efficient and productive and must be punished."

If your doctor prescribed Redux *and* Phentermine *and* Fenfluramine… I would encourage you to zip out and find another doctor. Now if, on the other hand, you were prescribed Redux and Phentermine, that combination has been being used more and more for the reason stated below. Redux’s major side effect (that I have heard about) is sleepiness… so the Phentermine balances that. Doubt if you are taking both, you will have a problem with insomnia. I take the redux twice a day and I’m not sure about the p/f the the B12 shot at least once a month.
It would help if you could tell us when you take the medications, what the dosages are, and what your doctor said to you regarding when to take them (with food, before eating, etc.). Are you a vegan? B12 is a supplement I take because of being a vegan (no animal products at all in the diet), but some docs give it as a boost of energy as well. My doctor was also concerned about my high blood pressure. He must have taken 10 times during my initial visit, but he decided it was not high enough to keep me from taking the meds.
10 times during the visit? Geez… either he is horrid at taking them or something was going on. Did he wait at least 5 minutes between readings on the same arm? It is necessary to let the arm come back to the normal pulse after a BP reading. Was he taking it while you were speaking to him? BPs should be done with the client sitting quietly for at least 5 minutes… without speaking or hearing distressing activities. Arm should be at heart level (usually on the caregiver’s hip), and the caregiver should be using a cuff that *fits* the client… anyone over 200 lbs having a large cuff used, and around 300+ having a thigh cuff used. Using a BP cuff that is too small only hurts *you* (more than embarrassment) because it can make your BP look sky high when it is actually normal. And *always* ask what your BP is… you can even call NOW, and ask… it is *your* information and everyone should know their BP and cholesterol numbers (plural… both HDL and LDL and their ratio *and* understand what they mean!). The diarrhea can be tended to with bananas and Metamucil… and keep some Ammodium AD in the purse or briefcase just in case
Thankfully, on PF, I had one day of loose stools and that was it. Hope that helps, and feel free to email me if you have more questions… oh yeah… and join the Phen-Fen list! Quite a few Reduxers there

Angie, I have been taking Fen-Phen for 6 weeks now. The only symptom I have had is dry mouth and an occasional headache. Other than that, I am 15 lbs. lighter. Good Luck! aj

Hi Angie, First of all, I don’t understand why you would be taking Redux as well as fen/phen. Are you taking 3 kinds of pills or capsules everyday at the same time? If so, please check with your doctor to make certain his instructions are clear. As far as insomnia is concerned, if you take the phentermine early enough in the day you shouldn’t have any problems. If you take it in the afternoon or evening it can very easily disturb your sleep. However, it’s important to remember that everyone reacts to medications in their own way. Imho, you should have a conversation with your doctor and make sure he lays out all of the side effects you might reasonably expect, as well as their duration. For example, I began having diarrhea within 24 hours after starting phen/fen. However it disappeared within just a few days and has never bothered me again. I also felt just a bit speedy, and that also disappeared in a few days. I hope I’ve been of some little assistance. You’re in the right place when you look for information on this newsgroup. Good luck. Keep in touch Michael I am new here. This Thursday (09-05-96) I start taking Redux and p/f both and vitamin B12 shots.
