Phentermine
Question:
What is the deal with this drug. It seems like finally there is a miracle drug out there.
Finally? It’s a very old drug. I don’t think "finally" is the right word. I have not started taking it yet but I know several people who have. They started at a size 14 and now are a 6. Are there any long term health concerns. can you get it prescribed to you by your physician? Let me know how others are doing?
My current physician had no trouble prescribing it. My previous wouldn’t prescribe it; but he wouldn’t prescribe anything for pain when I had torn tendons in my elbow either. I finally figured out he wouldn’t be agressive in the least with any kind of treatment and I considered his attitude dangerous. Phentermine isn’t anywhere near as bad for you as being 100 lbs overweight and his advice of "just eat less" didn’t impress me. He also seemed to have a "hearing" problem. — http://www.spinics.net/photo/

I’ve been taking phentermine for well over a year, lost 75 lbs and am keeping it off. I am currently taking 30 mg in the am, and 2×8mg in the pm, mid-afternoon and early evening. 37.5 mg would seem a little high to me for a starting out dose, I started much lower (15 mg). But then again, everybody’s different and phen alone doesn’t work for everybody.
Response:
I went to my Doctor today and was given Phentermine 37.5 mg. Is this considered a normal dose? Any info you have would be appreciated. I am new to this newsgroup and haven’t read all the previous postings on it. I tried looking up the drug in the PDR but the drug isn’t listed. I think my copy of PDR is too old. 1994 ediiton I hope it works as well as all the successes I read about PhenFen Phen/Fen did. Shelly

I have a couple of questions for all you phentermine people… I was on phen a few years ago, lost 30 pounds in 2 months and stopped taking it. Unfortunately, I gained the weight back. I started taking it again today (need to lose 40 lbs to wear a rather form-fitting dress for my fiance’s sister’s wedding haha). It worked for me before, but I am wondering if it’ll work this time around too. My questions are… How fast have you all been losing your weight? Has anyone been on phen, stopped taking it, restarted and had success? After you reached your goal (if applicable), have you had to remain on the meds? If not, have you maintained your goal? Thanks in advance to any responses Wummin~

It’s a common side effect. Generally it goes away after a while. You could try reducing your dose and see if that helps. Barbara Barbara Hirsch, Publisher OBESITY MEDS AND RESEARCH NEWS http://www.obesity-news.com

Barbara, Thank you for your feedback. I’ve seen your photos on your website. You should be very proud of yourself. You look wonderful. I’m assuming that you have had the same side effect. I just wish I know how long I might have to deal with it or should I just stop the medication. I’m currently taking a 30 mg. capsule so I don’t want to be breaking it open. I guess maybe I can get my doctor to change my prescription to lower dose, but will I still loss the same amount of weight on average. thanks, Juli – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been on phentermine now for 2 months and I have lost 12 lbs.. I called several pharmacies in Mexico this week. My MIL lives in AZ and purchases ALL her meds in Mexico with absolutely no problem. At this time, I will not ask her to purchase meds for me. (I wouldn’t dream of letting her know my business.) Anyway, I was advised of the name of one pharmacy that will ship to USA but haven’t actually talked with them yet; will update you if I do find the farmacia. As I ‘heard’ the name, it sounded like "Farmacia Vida". I had no problem finding English speaking people on the phone. I asked for "Farmacia" when I called….then "Do you speak English?" Very nice conversations. They just couldn’t give me Vida’s telephone number… The price I was quoted time and again…for a two month supply (#60 pills) of phentermine tablets 37.5 mg, was $27.00 US dollars. I was advised that I would have to come in personally for the above price; or if you live near Brownsville, TX, you can enter Mexico there and pharmacy after farmacia quotes this price with no prescription. I only have farmacia phone numbers. I will let you know if I find it cheaper. I myself did order from one of the online stores. Which, by the way, they say they will match the other online store selling the same meds for less. I’ll let you know when I get the credit. Will also give an update here on how the phentermine works for us. Blessings, Sheri – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I want to try it again after being off it 6 weeks and am wondering how to get it cheaper…the capsules don’t work for me and the price seems to be creeping up on me… so it’s $150 a prescription, wondering if there is a cheaper way than I have stumbled across on the web… Phentermine is a generic drug. I get it, scripted, for less than $25 for a 28 day supply. If it’s more expensive than that in TJ, you’re going to the wrong Mexico.

I was not recommending that people get meds in Mexico. I was just giving advice to those that choose to do so. Same with Fenfluramine – I was not recommending taking it (in fact, I personally don’t) but I have read on this newsgroup some people who say that they miss taking it – and I was just saying that it was available. I was trying to warn people about some of the pitfalls of getting drugs in Mexico. I do though want to know why you called me "the mad cow" and why you seem to be so upset with me.
Just for the record, I’m not one of those that said you are a mad cow and am upset with you. Really ;-} But I would question the authenticity of fen bought anywhere, because it’s not even manufactured legally anywhere anymore, and if there is something out there they are calling fen then it’s most likely not genuine or it’s very old stuff that’s been around more than a few years. Good, I wouldn’t recommend getting meds in Mexico. It’s a well known fact that Mexico has quality control issues. Nothing wrong taking some of these meds, just be smart about it. As for the message Xena (the mad cow) posted, stating that Fenfluramine was available as well. Granted the risk is minimal but why risk it at all? Don’t listen to people like Xena. Personaly I don’t feel they have your best interest in mind. Be smart people.
Quite frankly I don’t believe that fen is really available in TJ or anywhere. If anyone gets something there that is being represented as fen, then you definately shouldn’t take it. I’m not even talking about the documented medical risks, I’m saying the stuff isn’t really fen. I’d be willing to bet on that. Kara "If I had a dick, this is where I would be telling you to suck it." If you go to the Zona Norte in Tijuana (just across the border), you do not need a doctor’s script. The current price is ~$25 for a month’s supply of 30 mg tablets. All farmacias seem to be out of capsules at the moment. FYI, don’t bother driving in or walking across the bridge to Avenida Revolution — not only are the prices higher, but you are putting yourself at risk of being stopped by the Mexican police. They leave the Zona Norte alone as it is seen as a revenue-producing district that regular Mexicans don’t visit. P.S. Fenfluramine seems to still be readily available there.

How high should be dose go, before it’s dangerous. I work in a pharmacy, and I can’t seem to find a recommended dose anywhere greater than 30mg/day-time realeased. Steven Dyer said that it can go higher. I’m not sure exactly how high he mentioned.
You’ve mischaracterized what I might have said. 30mg/day of phentermine base (that would be 37.5mg of phentermine HCl) is the maximum daily dose that is approved by the FDA. You occasionally see people here reporting that their doctors prescribe somewhat higher doses, but that’s rather unusual, and at least would be considered outside the bounds of standard practice. I don’t think it’s well known yet how safe or effective higher doses of this drug might be in facilitating additional weight loss if someone has plateaued or failed to respond at the recommended doses. There’s no black and white here. But certainly, higher doses bring additional risks of drug dependence or other undesirable side effects. You’d hope that any doctor who used higher doses knew what s/he was doing.

: Phentermine is mildly addictive. BPH : I don’t agree. I wonder wher people get this also, I’ve run out of phen a time or two, or just didn’t feel like taking it from time to time. No withdrawl, no need for another "fix". But I guess, YMMV. The word "addiction" is very imprecise. You would not expect any withdrawal symptoms or drug-seeking behavior in someone prescribed 15-30mg of phentermine a day if it were suddenly stopped. However, it can be used to excess, just like any of the stimulant amphetamines. People taking very large amounts of such stimulants regularly may feel like they’re unable to function normally without the drug, and do their best to ensure they have a ready, steady supply. The reason that amphetamine and methamphetamine are C-II controlled substances is that they are very effective in producing feelings of well-being and euphoria, and to maintain that intensity of feeling usually requires increasing doses. Stopping this suddenly can produce an unpleasant "crash" if the person has been used to taking such high doses regularly. Also, even occasional recreational drug users recognize why these drugs are popular, so there’s a built-in attraction to these drugs which can lead some people to habitual misuse. Long-term high doses of any of these amphetamine-like stimulant drugs can produce a syndrome indistinguishable from paranoid schizophrenia which usually resolves after the drugs are stopped. Phentermine is a very close relative of amphetamine, but it doesn’t have quite the same "kick" as amphetamine when it comes to making you feel good. But that doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t try to misuse it and succeed to some degree. That’s why it’s classified as a C-IV controlled substance. But someone taking the recommended dose wouldn’t suffer if it were discontinued. I was a volunteer in a study in the early 80’s in which they administered amphetamine or a placebo to observe its effects on the social interaction between a group of individuals. (Who got the amphetamine was obvious within minutes.) Believe me, amphetamine is very different from phentermine at least in a quantitative sense, though they both are stimulants. I get more of a buzz from my morning coffee than I do from 30mg of phentermine, and no euphoria at all.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have some Fenflouramine from the original Rx that the doctor gave me and I probably should try it specifically for "that" time of the month. That’s when its really the hardest for me to stay on my diet, and if I do slip and start eating what I shouldn’t, I have an even harder time getting back on it.(drugs or no drugs) I go to a Weight Loss Clinic, that includes the medicine in the cost of my visit- $55.00 if I go every 3 weeks and $65.00 if I go once a month. They give you the exact amount of Phentermine and a Multi-vitamin until your next appointment. Two months ago, I asked for Pondiman, and the doctor tried to scare me out of it. I told him that I had a lot of weight to lose and that I would probably be on this stuff for a long time. When I told him that I could easily find another doctor willing to prescribe it, he gave me an Rx. Three weeks later, when I went back, I told him that it didn’t seem to be helping too much as far as controlling my hunger, but it did heldp with the insomnia. I had about half of the original prescription left, he told me that he didn’t think he should give me another. He felt that I was using it as a sleeping pill, and that could be dangerous. He told me to use up what I had, and get back to him. Since I had already paid to come back in one month, I didn’t want to get started on the Fen and not have enought to last until my next appointment. I had a good weight loss that month, so I didn’t ask for it again. Maybe I should

Yes, I lost 30 pounds in about 4 months last year while taking phentermine – it gave me lots of energy, made me not hungry, and aside from some initial jitters, had no side effects. The problem was that I quit taking it in January (I got tired of the constant hassle and expense of going to the doctor and then moved to a different area) and have gained back every pound and about 5 more. Oh, if only there were a drug like phentermine that didn’t require constant doctor supervision!
I heard that the weight lost while using phentermine is more than likely going to be regained upon not taking the medication. Is this true? I would like to hear from past phentermine users who have experience with either regaining the weight and with keeping the weight off once coming off of the diet pills. I’m considering using phentermine for a co-worker of mine has went from a size 16 to a size 12 in one months time. She has experienced some side effects, but the overall results seem worthwhile.

Has anyone had success getting Phen prescribed over the web? I’d appreciate any guidance in this matter. Thank you.
I have, it’s an expensive yet straightforward process. I used www.rxleader.com, completed their questionairre and had my order in two days.

I’m interested in ordering Phentermine on-line, but I’m not sure of a reliable source. Has anyone ordered phentermine from the link below? I’m thinking of doing so, but I don’t want to waste my money. Let me know….. Thanks, Doug http://www.choicemall.com/cgi-bin/tame/primarymedical/index.tam?cart=… p.zej&lpg=/primarymedical/2.tam&lpt=927505479
Yes, my friend has and she got exactly what she ordered and delivered to her door the next day. I personally get mine from my doctor but I don’t take it for weight loss anyhow..I take it for its effect on my add and its much cheaper for me from the doctor, but she would not be able to get many doctors to prescribe for her since she is really not more than five pounds overweight if that. Anyhow she has not had any problems with them, other than them not knowing that she isnt exactly the size she said she was, I am sure. May

Is there anywhere to buy phentermine online without a credit card? I was on it before & lost almost 60 pounds in 8 months. My Dr now won’t prescribe it because of a lawsuit from some patient. I am down to 165 (at 5′3) & I just need a few more months to get me down to my goal… any suggestions????? Melanie

Response:
I order it from myself (eprescibe affiliate) online. My doctor is in an HMO and chooses not to make waves after phentermine was removed from our HMO "approved" drug list (formulary). It is outrageously priced, but it is cheaper than going to one of our local "fat clinics" where they add on a whole list of services and give you the hard-sell for their liquid protein diets and packaged meal "services". But if you’re still asking how the drugs work then it is premature for you to be ordering anything. See your doctor. Do some research and lots of reading http://www.obesity-news.com/ Then make an informed decision. IMO one still needs an eating plan to follow and an exercise program of some kind for longterm health and success. Lee Rodgers Does it really work and where can I order it online? Thanks.

Phen is the only thing that has ever worked for me….suppresses my appetite and allows me to stay on a healthy eating plan without starving or going crazy. It also helps by reving up my metabolism…actually makes me want to exercise. Phen doesn’t seem to make me edgy or nervous (like the ECA stacks did) and I seem to feel "happier in general". Please research carefully before you order without a Dr…there are some medical "cautions" to be considered. A good place to start is at Barbara’s site www.obesity-news.com . You can order thru online pharms such as medprescribe.com …I have ordered thru them and they seem to be honest. Hope this helps….good luck! Pat S.

Yes it does work. It kills your appetite. You will not venwant to eat, but you must. If you don’t eat you will ruin your metabolism. So order it at www.medprescribe.com or some other online pharmacy. Be sure to check with your dr. to be sure you are healthy first. — Teresa Link ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor Certified Strength Trainer

Jack I just went to Wal-Mart pharmacy today and purchased phentermine. I’ve never taken it before, and I’m going to start tomorrow. Originally my mdoc prescribed Fastin and I was told by home-town pharmacy it was unavailable/no longer on the market, etc. I went to Wal-Mart pharmacy and he said Fastin is no longer available but one of the two drugs it was made of (phentermine) still is. The pharmacy called my mdoc and I now have my phentermine rx….so….it must still be on the market as of 4/20/00. I love to hear from you how it has worked for you. Take care, hope you can get it filled before you run out. DeDe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, Went to my usual major chain pharmacy here in Chicago for my monthly refill of phentermine. The tech informed me she would have to call the doctor as phentermine was "pulled from the market". I asked for rx back as I had checked prices at a different pharm two days ago and they had it in stock (but more expensive). She again told me "it was pulled", that’s why we don’t have it, so neither will they. I still have about a week left on hand, so I’ll wait for them to call the dr. My understanding is that there maybe a shortage but that the "pulled from the market" is just a rumor. I did do a quick search but found no info about a ban on phentermine. Any information on this? –jack
Response:
Phentermine was not pulled from the market. It is available but it seems only the brand name products are shipping. Does anyone smell a rat here?? Brand name Fastin is not being shipped anymore, but Adipex and Ionamin are a plenty. I was warned of the impending *shortage* and stocked up but when the other pharmacies around me started running out the demand on my stock depleted me rather quickly. I’m sure when it becomes available the acqusition price will be increased. Brad
Thanks for the info Brad. You were right on the nose. I stopped by the pharmacy today to find Ionamin instead of the generic phentermine from purepak. I suppose I misunderstood the pharm tech when she said phentermine was "pulled" to mean all phentermine, not just the generic. But, it could be she didn’t know what the non-generic
equivalents for phen are. The bottom line is $73.00 compared to $19.00, ouch. And I used to take only half the hcl some days. With the Ionamin I won’t be able to do that. I’m even pretty sure the prescription stated to take half a tab a day, that is how the dr usually prescribed in the past. On the other hand, maybe a change from the phentermine hcl to the resin will have a different effect for me, I’ve been maintaining for some time on the old. thanks again, –jack – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, Went to my usual major chain pharmacy here in Chicago for my monthly refill of phentermine. PS: Jack, if a medication is "pulled", that means the FDA had the medication removed from the market (or strong armed the pharmaceutical company into a "voluntary" withdrawal). There is ALWAYS a press release on the FDA web site (www.fda.gov) when this occurs. In addition, most newspapers carry stories like that, usually on the front page. Jack, You could try brand name Adipex-P instead of the Ionamin. Those are just like the generic Camall pills, and can be divided in half. I happen to take those myself (and only take 1/2 a pill). I doubt that you misunderstood your pharmacist. Misinformation about the phentermine situation abounds. However, the bariactic society (ASBP) has aked me if they could blast fax the article I’ve just finished on the phentermine shortage (going on the site today for subscribers). So hopefully pharmacists and physicians will have better information once the correct information becomes available. Barbara, Thanks for the follow up. I did do a quick search at the fda site and at your (non-subscription side) site before I posted as I thought the pharms terminology must have been wrong. I will follow up with dr on Monday about the Adipex-P. Although I have noticed that today with the Ionamin my usual urge to eat after 9pm has not surfaced. It seems as though a lot of people are prescribed phentermine, even for long-term treatment? I know of two people at work who have become faint. These people are nurses, however they obviously don’t eat or drink properly. If you saw them you would wonder how they even obtained the drug? Their BMI isn’t even close to 27 or even 25. Why aren’t more people prescribed sibutramine (Meridia) for the maintenance of weight loss? Cost? Clinical efficacy? They did not pull all the generic albuterol. Only the inhalers filled by Schering/Warrick. They hook you. They make the drug unavailable. They re-release it at at at least 100% price increase.
Zenith/Goldline and Apothecon dropped the price on their inhalers. Brad
