Prescription Drugs-Advertisements

Question:

I wondered whether you’d read up on any of the side effects of either of those,  for yourself. Well you should know by now I always read the side effects. I don’t mean just the few listed on the packet or the bottle

Neither did I. mean doing your own background study of it, so that you know if any harm could occur. There are books in the library, and places on the ‘net. Also, there are ongoing studies with a number of meds, so that new information keeps turning up (eg the h.r.t).

I am totally aware of that, what makes you think, I’m not? I  study up on them whenever I have to take some medication,  as I did when my children had to take any. Yes. of course. In one case, although the symptoms were serious, I decided to not give one of my children the prescribed meds, not right off anyway.  I tried other ways, and was lucky as they worked out well.

Yes. It was something I learned as a child, when someone in my family suffered severely due to side effects of various medications. karuna Yes, taking all of those meds while being a patient at Diamond Headache clinic is how I believe my immune sustem was  whiped out. I didn’t realise that you’d had many meds there.

You didn’t? I have posted many times how I went from one drug to another for 10 years, the final that helped was Nardil and in the begining, it made me unable to find my way down the hall to the bedroom, I also had nightmares and was getting out of bed climbing over the furniture! That was some serious stuff! But I had no choice, I had had a headache for 12 STRAIGHT years 24/7,,,,,,,,,and didn’t miss any work. I know that they can do a lot of damage. It happened in my own family. Thus started  my  new problems, believe me I wouldn’t be taking any medication if I had any other choice, Too much damge was done from the mercury poisoning. Jan There’s nothing wrong with taking medication when it’s right with you.

OK, but at that point, realizing what all the headache meds had done, I was very reluctant to take ANY meds.EVEN after I learned I had PN, a very painful condition with much burning and stinging. They can be life saving, no question of that.

Yes. There are precautions that are worth noting carefully, though, with many meds.  And I think that sometimes they may need adjusting over time, – to be increased or decreased, eg, and that a person’s doctor can

only be aware of  any need for change, to the extent that the patient talks to them about it all. karuna

Indeed. I have blood work done and check  ups every three months. So far nothing works as well as Neurontin, thus one has to risks the side effects. Jan

Response:

Is anyone here getting tired of seeing the Pharmaceutical           companies advertising campaigns on television, radio, and newspapers besides me?

Rich: No.  I find them informative. Television ads are so vague though. They usually show a woman dancing in some field like Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music" and the commercial voice over is so vague that I don’t even know what they are hawking. Not my source of information for meds. frank frank

headaches, stomach ache, dizziness, Oops they don’t mention that one. Jan

No arguement that some meds have wicked side effects. Some side effects, in fact, can be worse than the actual symptoms. But they can be life-saving. I’m thinking of a woman patient that I saw not long ago for an eye exam on massive doses of steroids that were causing obvious side effects. She looked at me in the eye and told me that the steroids were the only thing keeping her alive. frank

Response:

Jan has been taking Elavil and Neurontin for years. Jan,  do you take them?  Regularly?

Every day. And twice on Sunday:-))) Jan stubbornly refused to take the medications for a year after she was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy IIRC. Then she started taking them and found that her symptoms of peripheral neuropathy improved a great deal. In fact she has stated on a number of occasions "Thank God for Neurontin and Elavil". Jan has stated that she has used a number of different alternative remedies for her peripheral neuropathy that have been effective. She includes among the effect treatments, removal of amalgams, chelation, supplements, magnetic insoles, and others. Interestingly she continues to take both Elavil and Neurontin. I am not sure if Jan tried to come off either Elavil or Neurontin to see if she could just get by with the alternative treatments alone  but if she did I imagine that she soon found out how effective for the pain these medications are and rapidly resumed taking them. But Jan is unable to explain how she can regain her health when she is taking two toxic medications that are wiping out her immune system and just covering up the real problem. Just because Jan does not feel the pain does not mean that the problem is gone. Those meds are just covering up the problem. I am surprised that Jan fell for the brainwashing by these evil organized medicine men. She has been on Elavil and Neurontin for over two years now IIRC. Why on earth Jan has agreed to be a guinea pig for these two meds in combination is beyond me. Aloha, Rich The best defense to logic is ignorance.

Yes.  It a bad situation.  There’s no way a one minute commercial can provide anywhere near adequate information, for many of the dangerous drugs now advertised, to the average consumer.  There was an ad for a sleeping pill called "Sonata".  To a background of the famous Beethoven tune of a similar name, the caveats, including death, were rapidly read by a dispassionate vocal actor.  Funny.  But useless for anyone who wanted to know how this drug might fit into their life. arf

Actually, I am inclined to agree with you about this.   There is even now a lot of this in Australia, whereas previously little more than antacids got any air time.  Mind you, you could say the same about supplements and herbal preparations, which often nowadays. come from the same sources . Note that if Jan was not taking Elavil and Neurontin that she would take the opportunity to say : Rich is a liar and a stalker. Don’t believe a word he says.  I think the fact that she failed to call me a liar is absolute proof that she is taking both Elavil and Neurontin. Do you think that Jan would let the opportunity to call me a liar slip by like that?? Jan calls me a liar when I tell the truth. For her not to call me a liar must mean that I told the gospel truth!! But trying to get Jan to answer the question is like pulling teeth, which come to think of it, is right up Jan’s alley:-))) Aloha, Rich karuna

It is a simple question. Wonder why Jan does not answer.  I have asked you questions that remain unanswered. Yes Jan. It is clear that when YOU ask a question you want it answered. If someone asks YOU a question then you can pick and choose whether you answer or not. You badger people repeatedly about not answering YOUR questions while refusing to answer the simplest of questions. You go first.

And then after you answer those questions Jan will have a few more to ask before she answers. Lord have mercy. Aloha, Rich Jan Jan

Response:

What Side Effects Can Be Caused by Neurontin? Side Effects can be dose related (common) or Idiosyncratic (rare): Common Dose-Related Side Effects: Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, double vision, tremor, and unsteadiness when walking. These side effects are most frequent at the start of treatment, and they are temporary and usually go away as your body gets adjusted to the medicine. If you have these side effects, your doctor may: 1) spread out the dose evenly throughout the day in four divided doses 2) decease the daily dose, and increase the bedtime dose 3) instruct you to take your pill with food since this will slow the rate at which the medicine gets into the blood, but will not affect the total amount that is absorbed. Rare Side Effects: Very rarely, Neurontin can reduce the body
