Question about PMS

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, I have a question about the days before the mensruation. See I can have really down moments feeling terrible before my menstruation. But hormones are not an option because i had cervixproblems wich places me in the group with a slightly higher chance off cervixcancer. As some off you may know doctors are reluctant to describe hormons then. I will add that I would not take them anyhow. Now I read somewhere that some women take a little bit more SSRI before their menstruation. Are ther people here who know about that? And if you have a very instable cycle( from 18 till 25 days ) how would you handle it then? I would take the increased dose of an SSRI on those days when I was suffering from PMS. A prior poster to ASAP would increase her dose of Celexa to treat her PMS for only 2 or 3 days in a row, and this gave her considerable relief from her PMS. She noticed the relief on the *same day* she increased her morning dose of Celexa. She noted the improvement by the afternoon. Going by intuition? Thanks on forehand  Anna Hi Miss Anna! Chip ;)

Well, I can allways try that, but i am on 40 mg. paxil and sometimes quit tired So taking more would have me sleep all day lol Hi mr. Chip ;) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – — /msg NickServ IDENTIFY myself please ! Before you buy.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anna:  In line with what Margrove said… I had my annual gyn. checkup in October, and mentioned to the doc that I’d been having lots of anxiety and insomnia in the middle of the night, or early mornings, just before my periods. My gyn. recommended that I take a soy capsule at bedtime every night. It has done *wonders* for my sleep during that PMS cycle. The phytoestrogens in the soy are the key to stabilizing your hormonal ups and downs a bit, I think. Now I sleep through the night most nights — hooray. Good luck, Anne (Back on ASAP –I’m so excited!!) Margrove I have another question. You talk about ibuprophen,  I thought that was a painkiller. Or am I wrong? I have no pain during PMS yes it is an nsaid type drug that reduces inflamation and blocks prostoglandins a hormone substance that creates types of pain and inflamation-so even though you don’t "hurt" you may be responding to bloating water retention the rupturing of the ovum the whole hormonal miracle of what makes a women a women—so with this miricle comes this price-the price of

being-well-moody and – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – inflamed and boggy and uncomfortable-so lessening the threshold of pain can sometimes help-the activity of the ssri does this from a different mechanism-but still is modulating how one preceives pain-btw the tca’s do this better but they have a stronger anticholinergic muscarinic and antihistaminic property which for some women means additional symptoms during menses-but it all is a ymmv thing. Symptomatic treatment is what you go for if you cannot use hormonal treatments or use hormonal treatments that are more indirect-like herbals and vitimins-which I am sure can be gotten in a health food store or via the internet. Vitmin c in large does like 1-3 grams a day acts as a mild anti-inflamatory and antihistaminic-folate can reduce water retention etc etc… there is an enzyme in pineapple juice that can reduce inflamation-saw palmeto increases serum estrogen-there are other alternatives LM

Margrove thank you for helping out I will go for the soycapsules and see what it does If it is not working then I will try one off your other suggestions Greetings Anna

Response:

Dear Anne,  After reading this and the mails from margrove I am going to try the soycapsules Are you taking them the whole month or what?

Anna, I take one every night. But my doctor said I could just take them when I start to have PMS. So it’s your choice. I figure the soy is doing good things for me even when I’m not PMS-ing! – Anne —

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does the soycapsules also work on the moodswings? That is my main problem. It’s really worth trying, Anna. I don’t know for sure — I still get moody before my period, but that’s the hormones … and if the soy is helping offset some of that, it might help your crabbiness too.  :-)  There is no downside to taking the soy capsules… soy is good for you, a vegetable form of protein with phytoestrogens… Women of my age group (I’m 49) are particularly recommended eat or take soy in some form to help with the even crazier mood swings and physical symptoms (like hot flashes, which I do not have — yet!) we experience before and during "the Change." Good luck! (If Philip starts firing soy capsules *back* at you, just laugh and eat ‘em all!)    ;-) – Anne

I will never fire at Anna, I’m a gentleman <g, I’ll just blow her a gentle kiss… P. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – —

Hello Anne Does the soycapsules also work on the moodswings? That is my main problem. I do have a bit off a sleeping problem while PMS, but nothing big Just a few hours less. But I can cope with that. It are the moodswings and the downie-crabbie feelings that are hitting me. So i was wondering if the caps where any help for that too. anna ssri’s are neurosteroidal modulators so yes an increase may help or using a second type med for the premenstrual days-ask your doc if he recomends this as there may be other health matters that contraindicate doing it-you can also use diuretics and nsaids like ibuprophen and products that contain soy to stimulate natural estrogens-there are also herbal remedies that can stimulate natural hormonal secretions with less risk to cervical saturation like synthetics. LM

Thank you very much I have a nice doctor who is open to suggestions so i will take your letter with me. :) Greetings Anna

Hi Anna I’m 36 and my PMS got so bad I couldn’t even work! I’m very high risk for cancers but I still tried artificial hormones and afetr 7 months my body readjusted to the drugs and all the symptoms came back. My friend swears by the homeopathic remedy Agnus Cactus? I haven’t tried it, but I’m sceptical. Because I also suffer depression and PD I’ve tried to look at options using anti-depressants. I’ve just changed from tricyclic to and SSRI ‘cos of my constant anxiety state recently, and I’ve not had a full cycle yet. I’d be very interested to hear how you get on. Good luck Cathy

What type of hormones do people take for PMS?  Has it worked for anyone? I’ve only been given SSRI’s (by my gynecologis for PMS, and by my psychiatrist for depression and anxiety), just had a terrible time on my third SSRI this year, and now I won’t try those anymore.
