remeron(mirtazapine) questions
Question:
I was on it for about 3 months. Started at 15 mg before bed. Initially did not have any side effects. After 2 weeks it kicked in and I felt great no anxiety, no depression, plenty of energy, and my appetite was great. After about a month it lost it’s affect and I started feeling groggy all day, I also started feeling slightly anxious with a touch of depersonalization, and I started having trouble concentrating. My GP upped my dosage to 22.5 mg, after the second day of this I started to feel spacey, with occasional stabbing eye pains and numbness in my cheeks. I stopped after 4 days. My GP told me to take two weeks off and then start up at 7.5 mg for a while. I made it 7 days before the anxiety started up, severe GAD not PAs. I started taking 7.5 mg per day again, the anxiety went away but the spaciness and daytime grogginess started to get worse. My GP put me on Celexa that lasted for a day, almost fell asleep two hours after I took it, and completely lost my appetite. I am now on lorazepam for the anxiety. I read somewhere that the side affects of Remeron are not linear. Going to 30 mg may give you a different set of side effects than at 15 mg. It definately takes time for this med to work. I think 2 to 4 weeks is average. And then it may need to be increased until a theraputic level is reached. Don’t let my experience put you off, I have trouble with ADs and prefer not to deal with the side effects. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi, I’m asking this for a family member who started taking remeron yesterday and she feels extremly tired and crappy. She has occasional periods of panic attacks and she just had the flu and from that went straight into depression/anxiety/insomnia:( She is on 30 m/g a day…. Could anyone who has experience with this drug share their experiences about the first few weeks and long term benefit and if the dosage is ‘ok’ many many thanx

Hi Mark, It is common for people when they wean on anti-depressants to experience some side-effects during the first few weeks. . People with anxiety disorders tend to be super sensitive to the effects of medications. It is wise to start people with anxiety at a low dose and to increase the dose slowly, usually increasing the dose once a week. I think this person should have been started at a lower dose( 15mgs), and it could explain the fatigue and crappy feeling. It is also important to note that anti-depressants can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to start working. If she continues to feel so lousy she shouldn`t hesitate to call her doctor and discuss this with him. Good luck to her. Jackie

The way that I heard that it works is: low dose increased sedation; higher dose increased antidepressant activity. You have to wean up slowly. I couldn’t tolerate the side effects. Mel
