Serious and slightly Humorous about the insominia thing

LOL Hi.  I’ve dealt with insomnia for about fifteen years now–I was insomniac in junior high, possibly even earlier.  Here are a few things I’ve found helpful. Most are obvious, but they do help. 1.  Cut out caffeine.  If you can’t go cold turkey, stop at 3 pm (or earlier, depending on what time you plan on going to bed).  Remember that lots of foods have caffeine. There are plenty books out there that can give you the caffeine content of foods and drinks. 2. Don’t eat after 8 pm.  Starchy foods, like bread or rice, turn to sugar in your bloodstream, and will give you unwanted energy.  Proteins, like meat or nuts, usually sit like rocks in my stomach if I eat them at night–another surefire way not to get to sleep. 3. Do yoga or meditate.  Some people find it to be stimulating, but I find that it calms the maelstrom of chatter in my mind and body enough so that I can fall asleep. 4.  Get a small indoor fountain for your bedroom.  This has done wonders for my sleeping.  It’s improved the quality of my sleep tremendously–I feel much more rested when I wake up. 5.  Read a boring book.  Sounds crazy, but I have a stack of carefully chosen books on my night stand for that purpose only.  I personally swear by Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time (puts me to sleep in under two pages), but I’ve found that just about any type of extremely academic non-fiction will work.  If, OTOH, you LIKE extremely academic non-fiction, you will want to choose something that DOES bore you to sleep. deb —                                Faith manages.

Well, the talk is that cognitive therapy gets good results.  Have you looked at _Feeling Good_ by David Burns?  Or _Learned Optimism_ by Martin Seligman?  I belong to a support group that uses cognitive methods, and I think it helps.   Good luck! lisa — tonite, on a very special lisa

Lots amd lots of exercise. I know it sounds cliche but it works. You go to the gym … bang a raquette ball around for an hour or so and you’ll sleep like a baby. I went through the pills, warm milk, soothing muzak, … when all else fails burn yourself out physically and you’ll sleep great! Noah

My ultimate solution is to go ahead and embrace the insomnia. I simply stay awake. Of course, if you have to get up early and go to work, this won’t work for you. Maybe you could try Melatonin with Valerian or the Silent Night herbs? Bobbie < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < <

Someone joked here about this suggestion, but yoga has some postures for insomnia.  Haven’t tried them yet though …. too damn tired. hehe. Seriously, if you do yoga, you might look into it.

We are having a bumper crop of cicadas at the moment.  They have hatched out of their ten year sleep and going beserk – the males making a high pitched whirring noise to attract the females (god knows why the females think its sexy!!!).  The numbers are higher than normal cos not as many got drowned – the rain fall has been lower than normal.  Apparently at 1m away they make about the same noise as a jumbo jet taking  7m away.  Pretty painful expecially on hot nights when you are tossing & turning from the humidity already. The grasshoppers are pretty ferocious too.  I woke up last week at 2.30 am to find a) my mobile phone was beeping cos the battery was going flat (I hate being a light sleeper!!!) and b) the kitchen light was on,  After stumbling around in the dark I managed to fall back into bed only to have a sound I can only describe as someone trying to drill into my ear start up. At first I was experiencing an auditory hallucination then I gave the energy to swith the light on.  It was a grasshopper just above my head, in the corner of the room. I knocked it off the wall only to have it land on me.  I let out a loud shriek then managed to pick it up.  When I got to the front door the little fucker bit me.  It hurt!!!! I hurled it across the room with another loud shriek, my heart pounding, wide awake.  I finally managed to get it outside by wrapping it in paper. IT was lucky I didn’t just squash it!  Funnily enough my flatmate managed to sleep through all of it (I hate heavy sleepers!!!  Well no I don’t but I’m very jealous)  He did manage to incorporate into a funny dream though. Another thought for insomnia – some herbally shops have pillows made out of lavender andsuch which are supposed to be good for sleep.  I certainly use a mix of essential oils to aid me when I’m all sinusy.
