Serzone
Question:
Does anyone have any experience with Serzone? Especially those who switched from Effexor. My mother is taking Effexor, but it has not been working as well. Her doctor prescribed Serzone. Any information would be appreciated.
Response:
I’m new here, so I hope you don’t mind me jumping in. I was on Serzone for about 14 months a couple of years ago. I started on Paxil, and the side affects weren’t so hot, so the doctor switched me to Serzone. I did very well on it, fewer side affects, and I didn’t feel "medicated" as I had on the Paxil. I am considering calling my doctor and talking to him about possibly going back on it for a time. I’ve been having those "conversations" in my head again and I think the depression is rearing it’s ugly head again. I have been on and off Serzone for about 3 years now and I have found it to be very good for me personally, but as with all medications your mother may react very differently from me… I switched from Effexor to Serzone myself and the only side effects I have are (this is a bit gross)…. looser bowel motions, and sometimes a bit of an aura effect around light in the evenings but I have found that this is dose related… I am now in 400mg’s and don’t have this problem. I wish your mum all the very best, JustUs

I’m having reasonably good results with Serzone. It’s taking a long time to get adjusted right. I have some fatigue and some restlessness but I feel like there’s a reasonable chance that I’ll make tomorrow. I’m losing a bit of the 70 lbs. I gained on Prozac. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – says… Hi, everybody…Has anyone on here had any good results with Serzone.. I was on it for two months and it just didn’t work, despite the doc increasing the dosage a couple of times. I"ve been on Paxil for a year, it worked well for a time, but now i’m finding I sometimes need two 20mg doses a day.

Response:
Yup- Been on it for about two years. Was one of the only ADs I could tolerate. I’m taking 575- seems to work well. Occassionally, like now, it needs to be augmented with something else for a little while. I have gained a lot of weight. Related to the serzone??? None of the sude effects that others have mentioned, which is WIERD since I have side effects from tiny quantities of virtually any drug. But you’ll need to stick it out for a while if you can and get it up high enough to really work. Two weeks isn’t any where near long enough! Good luck- Susan

I was on Serzone for about a year in ever increasing doses. I finally hit 600 mg per day, supposedly the maximum recommended dosage. Unfortunately, it stopped working for me. While I noticed a difference whenever I tried to decrease the dosage, it was not strong enough to overcome a major depressive episode which landed me in the hospital for 3 weeks. As a result of that hospital stay, I switched to Effexor which I am again starting to increase. While the Serzone was working, I did OK on it but I am feeling better on the Effexor. vad

Hi everyone. I’m new to the list. I’ve probably been suffering from moderate depression most of my life but now it’s become more severe due to chronic illnesses including Multiple chemical sensitivity and chronic rhinosinusitis. I had been on Prozac for three years but that became ineffective. I tried Wellbutrin for a while but it made me wired and then I tried Paxil but it didn’t do much and my sex drive was totally gone. Now I’m trying Serzone. Is anyone on Serzone or tried it? What has your experience with it been? Thanks for your responses. I wish you all well. Marla
Hiya, I started serzone almost 2 weeks ago. Still too soon to tell much, but I don’t have any side effects to speak of. Well, I don’t really consider dry mouth much of a side effect. I was having some pretty bad anxiety attacks a few weeks ago (one of the reasons I went back on meds) and since starting the serzone they have abated quite a bit. I am also sleeping better. Depression wise, I haven’t noticed much yet. Patrick

Sort of like playing Doom or Duke Nukem with too high a screen resolution and not enough video ram… Tell me, did you take anything concommitant with the Paxil? I know diazepam (Valium) really can freak you out while on Paxil, and even common over-the-counter antihistimines can do this. Strangely, usually only when awakening during the night… also I took Tylenol PM to help me sleep (because of the insomniac-side-effects of the SSRI’s) and that triggered this strangeness once. -Chris Out here in the fields I fight for my meals. I was taken off Paxil for late-night hallucinations… very strange, maybe what you mean by "strobe vision": not like an LSD trip or anything like that (if you’re familiar with same), but rather like everything in my field of vision was coming "deconstructed", i.e. in the bathroom random groups of floor tile would seem to detach from the rest and "jump" at me, my own eyes in the mirror seemed separated from me, etc., hard to explain!… when I took my glasses off and looked at the nightlight in the dark (myopically, this resembles a large glowing jellyfish-kind of cell thing… you won’t understand unless you’re _extremely_ near-sighted) started having intricate fractal winding-undulating paisley patterns in it. All accompanied by a sort of low "whoosh whoosh" heart beat blood pulse in the ears. Rather disconcerting. Stopped when I stopped Paxil. Incidentally, I’ve tried about six different anti-depressants with no success with any of them over the last year (now _that’s_ fucking depressing!) but now I’m finally on Serzone and it’s helping wonderfully. I like the name, too, kind of sounds like a tasty Italian dish. Happiness to you. (-Chris) Out here in the fields I fight for my meals. I get my back into my living. Hey! If you ever need to consider another med, i’d give Serzone another chance. I too am switching from Paxil to Serzone and was told in very clear terms to not start the Serzone till I’d been completely off the Paxil for three days. Tell your Doctor , those side effects sound execsive. Zoloft bothered me with headaches, Paxil made me jumpy. With Serzone I fell great. There are several other anti-deppresents on the market. Im sure one of the will help you without any side-effects. I had sleep disorders ,my Doc augmented my medication with Doxepin taken at bedtime.

You should never allow a drug to mess you up that bad. Your options are to either cut back the dosage to 1/2 of the recommended dosage (if that fixes it) and then work your way up or call you doctor to get assistance. My doctor has told me to double some meds. When I did – it was a shock to my system. So I went back down to the original dose and told him what happened and that I remained on the original dose. They assume the dosage is so low it won’t cause trouble. So you have to take care of yourself to not get screwed. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I took Paxil for about 7 months with excellent results except for never being able to sleep at night. I guess my next question is did the drug work. Effexor worked quite well for me, but they are hesitant to let me do that one again because it made me crave alcohol so bad. I went off it I quit drinking, also it seemed to help right away or at least in the first week I felt better, was back interested in other people and they in me. Now im back to my old ways not communicating well, anxiety, resentful and isolated I hate it. I sure hope this stuff will work. Ive tried one other Prozac it made me edgy and irratable, what would one think as the next possibility given the serzone does not work out? By the way thanx for all the response, I know I am not alone with this disease and know first hand for most of my life it seems how it can really screw someone up, I salute all that have the courage to keep trying.

i took serzone for almost four years.. it worked well enough, until i needed an increase, when the increase worked everything was fine again. unfortunately the events in november past caused me to crash, and i maxxed out on it. i was taking 800mg a day without recovering improvement. the doctor gave me effexor xr and weaned me off the serzone. compared to zoloft, paxil, and effexor i had little to no side effects -migraine when i was coming off it. zoloft fried my brain, paxil and effexor both have caused unwanted weight gain, although the effexor has improved my depression even more so then the serzone did. for almost four years it was my lifesaver. donna — ~ the truth of the matter is far more revealing it’s a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling ~ http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Booth/9337 ASD Birthday Book http://www.geocities.com/asdbday/ don’t forget to sign the guestbook! —

I was on Serzone for a few months. It worked well with anxiety, it helped me to sleep at night and it worked great for the "jaw clenching" that I do, but unfortunately for me I was never able to get the dosage up high enough to work on my depression. I am too sensitive to anything that is prone to making you sleepy and I could hardly stay awake on it – even taking it at bedtime only. I didn’t have any negative side effects other than the sleepiness so if you can get past that you’ll probably do great. I have heard that for some this is an excellent medication. I am now on prozac and klonopin and do well on that as long as I take a small dose of the klonopin and only take it at night. We are all different – I hope this works well for you! Bonnie

Lot’s of ups and downs with them all… if you’ve been on it for 6 weeks and it’s not working… time to let ur doc know …… Some meds work better for some…… some for others…. even within the same class of antidepressants…. and there are other classes as well.

LOL, haven’t heard one. Actually, I have the highest respect for cognitive therapist and cognitive therapy…. it was just all those oughts and shoulds I was putting in the sentence. A major no no in cognitive therapy.
Yeah, you shouldn’t use ’shouldn’t.’

Are they those irony-of-life kind? Medical people seem to like those kind. I like them too. Medical people tend to have warped senses of humor…. it’s a self preservation thing based on what we work with. Ok. So what is the joke about cognitive therapists or therapy?

Yeah, I will admit… I’ve heard horror stories…. there really ought to be a board certification for it……
For all of it. For more than all of it. Just think what happens when someone with narcissistic personality disorder goes into talk therapy clinical practice. Don’t think it doesn’t happen all over – they’re drawn to those sorts of fields. haha, want to see something funny? well, it’s not funny, it’s pretty sick. Anyway, you know that antisocial personality disorder and the sociopathy/psychopathy bit? Well, there are a number of researchers who look at behaviour for it and they find all sorts of characteristics. Some of them are in speech patterns and visual artwork. Behavioural profiling stuff. Anyway, there are distinct characteristics. Take a look at Jack Kevorkian’s writings and paintings. lol, boy is there a statement that I shouldn’t… there is another one.. make with cognitive therapy. lol
What are they? Laughing is good. Are they those irony-of-life kind? Medical people seem to like those kind. I like them too.

Very true, and it is still considered the most effective treatment of depression…. but, it is better with a therapist, or at minimum a partner….. to compare notes with….. Yeah, but you have to find a therapist who won’t rip you off. That’s not so easy. Is there some body that verifies competency specifically for cognitive-behavioral therapy? There are a lot of therapists who offer it and claim to do it but they don’t – they just talk and take people’s money, keep them from crisis and on the hook.
