Spasm's

Question:

Hi, Geoffrey! While in hospital last year, I met a guy who is a quadraplegic. His problem was that he suffered from terrible back spasms. As a recovering drug addict, narcotic pain medication wasn’t anything he would touch. They luckily found the solution for him, and it was Nozinan, a neuroleptic drug mostly used against psychosis. This drug is also used as a sleeping aid, against severe itching and pain. The active ingredient in Nozinan is levomepromazin. hydrochloride. I use it myself against itching and insomnia. When I have particularly bad pain days I also use it to help that. Maybe something to try? The PDR says 25-50 mg every 4-6 hours as pain medication. I use 5-10 mg at night for sleep and have found that the same dose in addition to my pain medication will help quite a lot for the pain. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I suffer with Ankylosing Spondylitis and 6 years ago had both hips replaced and a back operation – Lower lumbar Osteotomy. A year ago I suffered  a terrible sickness bug which entailed much retching. Since then I have periodically suffered from spasm’s in the lumbar region of my back when I try to go to sleep. I had been able to avoid these by wearing a corset and sleeping in a particular position. However they have now got so bad that I cannot avoid them unless I drink half a bottle of Rum before going to bed. Apart from the fact that I cannot afford this, I don’t want to wake up with a hangover every day. My Doctor prescribed 5ml of Baclofen (Lioresal) per day. This had no effect so he has today increased this to 15ml per day. I am not at all confident that this will work. Can anyone give any advice as to what I could do or take as I am getting rather desparate. Please note however that I have had two burst stomache ulcers, so I have to be careful what drugs I take.

Geoff, Hmm, seems to me that if you have stomach ulcers, that drinking all that rum to relieve muscular spasms might not be the greatest idea. Unless you want to end up on an alcoholic ward in a few years with cirrhosis, portal hypertension, wet brain, etc. etc. Then the spasms wouldn’t bother you so much! The baclofen is usually used for spasm secondary to multiple sclerosis or spinal chord injury. It may be helpful in your case. There are other meds the doc can rx if it doesn’t work. You might want to see if all that retching when you had the bug might have torn or sprained a muscle, or caused a herniation. It sounds like you are in alot of pain and discomfort. It ”wont hurt to shop for another opinion if you arn’t satisfied with current doc. Stan-rx-man
