Sub 7's!

…. relax, no need to lose sleep over it. it’s only insomnia. half as not as bad as what bill suffers from. but seriously, you could try a few things: – tea before you go to bed (not green tea since it’s got caffeine). – read a book. (e.g., "learn how to sleep in three weeks." 3rd edition.) – meditation and deep relaxation. this might take a while to master. – go to bed in a dark room. – a warm shower before bed. – try changing sleeping surfaces for a few days. if you sleep on a mattress, try the carpet/floor for a change. hope this helps jobs

It ain’t much of a breakthrough to most of you, but yesterday I ran consecutive sub-7 miles. There are no mile markers on my Lunch Run, but I warmed up fully before the start and kept a fairly even pace throughout. 3.2mi 22:02 6:53!!!
congrats. Every goal achieved means you’ve got a new goal to dangle in front of yourself. Are you going to hunt for 6:30 or stop off at 6:45? Andy

I plan to hunt for 6:30. I’m pretty sure that will be my personal limit for some time. Of course, I don’t expect to run 6:30 for 10K. I expect to turn in a sub-20 5K, though. I guess that’s my ultimate goal. I could probably run a 6:30 single mile tomorrow if I tried. But 5K seems a good "race" to me. Anything beyond that will require a more conservative approach, I’m sure. Tonite was my first day as an assistant coach. I have 5 runners in my group – beginners who feel confident enough to run for 15 minutes at +/- 10min pace. It was fun! I got a few fairly quick women, one slower woman and one middle-aged guy who just quit smoking. I spent most of my time with him, watching his breathing and pace and encouraging him to finish the 15 minutes, which he did. He seems determined to improve and run for fitness. If I can help him get into a good running schedule and run with decent form, I’m sure he’ll drop 30 pounds and walk away from cigarettes forever. The next 8 weeks should prove very interesting. – TR – "coach".

Good luck on the coaching. It looks like I’ll be coaching boys volleyball soon. For a team sport, I enjoy volleyball the best. It’s a small team, so they will get a lot of court time. Hoping to do well and build up the program for the future. I can reflect on the effort required to do this run and I now feel confident that will I be running sub-20 5K’s by the end of summer. As long as I continue to spend a day or two a week doing intervals and hills, I should be running at that pace by then. Of course, I realize that I will probably "top out" at that speed, as I’m not really a natural runner. I’m an unnatural runner. I’m a freak of nature. But I will be a fast freak, and that’s good enough for me! – TR – not even pooped.

Uh huh, he probably did 12 minute miles, but was so high from the extra chocolate puddings he ate at lunch he didn’t notice. Bill R. @ @

Good stuff. I remember breaking straight sevens on a 10 miler a little while back, and felt invincible. It was like this is a reasonably fast pace and I can keep doing it for a long time. This is a milestone for me in my running. I can reflect on the effort required to do this run and I now feel confident that will I be running sub-20 5K’s by the end of summer. You’re still a fair way from that. But train consistently and you will keep improving. Of course, I realize that I will probably "top out" at that speed, as I’m not really a natural runner. I’m an unnatural runner.
I doubt that you’ll drop 30 seconds or so per mile, and then suddenly stop improving. You’ll improve steadily if you’re patient, even if you’re not a "natural runner". Cheers, — Donovan Rebbechi http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~elflord/

You’re : turning : into : a : running : bore Where’s the prose, the alliteration, the metaphor, the quirky style, the smouldering ego? It’s turned into distances, numbers, extrapolations. Get a grip m’boy. Roger. PS, nice to go sub 7, isn’t it? Wait till you hit sub 6

Congrats. Recently I was able to do 3×800 at 7:30 pace, so I have a glimpse of the satisfaction you feel. BTW, I followed it with a mile at 8:20 pace, and I was pooped! Much work to do on this end… — Eduardo Suastegui "Test everything; Hold on to the good." (Remove 701 when replying via e-mail)

The grip was lost due to the effects of certain intoxicants and the comparatively late hour, knowing full well I had to get up at 4:30am and drive to work so I could reach a vendor in Ireland by phone and read the drunken louts my version of the Riot Act. I simply had to spew out my news as succinctly as I could, then leap into bed and catch as many winks as my damnable insomnia would allow*. It’s a good thing my time has improved, for tomorrow night I turn from running student into running coach! I will be a team leader for my running class. In my tutelage will be six or so doughy middle-aged women in need of attention, reassurance and instruction. With any luck, one or more of them will also need a Ted-style love injection! Hoo eee! This running thing is working out pretty damn well! – TR * I have finally given up. I’ve suffered from insomnia since early December and I can take it no more. I have an appointment with a doctor next Thursday. Since I haven’t visited a quac^H^H^doctor of any sort in years and years, I’m sure there will plenty of questions and answers and interesting conversation. I’m fully expecting him to doff me off to a psych, who will no doubt pronounce my insomnia and anxiety as depression and put me on acetycholinesterase inhibitors toot-sweet. That’s fine. I don’t care if they pronounce me schizotypal and put me on Thorazine. If I can get 8 fucking hours of sleep, I will admit to anything and swallow any drug placed near me. OTC sleep aids have proved worthless. And no, Bill: jerking off before I go to sleep doesn’t seem to help, either. You sick bastard.
