Sudafed and Tegretol

Question:

Last night I took Sudafed before bedtime.  My heart has racing.  It was beating so fast and I couldn’t go to sleep until 4:30 a.m..  Has anyone had an experience like this with Sudafed and Tegretol?

Response:

this happens to me on sudafed and i don’t take seizure medication.  it’s very dangerous. i think there is some kind of a warning on the package about arrythmias, which is what i get from it (irregular heartbeat). i heard that the latest street drug is speed made from sudafed and other ephedrine/ephedrine-like products. lulu – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Susan Catlin wrote in message <370F9FA7.6B44A…@wildhorses.net>… >Last night I took Sudafed before bedtime.  My heart has racing.  It was >beating so fast and I couldn’t go to sleep until 4:30 a.m..  Has anyone >had an experience like this with Sudafed and Tegretol?

Susan, I don’t think it was the combo. (A pharmacist can tell you that).  I can tell you that pseudephedrine found in Sudafed is a chemical equivalent to ephedra.  Ephedra can cause the heart to race.  It is used in alot of herbal diet products because it can give energy to the person and help in weight loss.  The down side is that if taken prior to bed( or at other times with sensitive individuals) it can cause the heart to race and it can also cause insomnia.  I personally sell herbal products and have heard of stories of my clients having these problems.  Some have even ended up cleaning closets at night because they have so much energy.  With my clients, I recommend that they take the stuff no later than 4 in the afternoon.  With Sudafed I would think similar side effects could occur. You may be too sensitive to the Sudafed.  I would talk with the doctor and ask him for advice, especially since you are on Tegretol as well. I hope this info is of some help.  Good Luck and I hope you get some sleep. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Susan Catlin wrote in message <370F9FA7.6B44A…@wildhorses.net>… >Last night I took Sudafed before bedtime.  My heart has racing.  It was >beating so fast and I couldn’t go to sleep until 4:30 a.m..  Has anyone >had an experience like this with Sudafed and Tegretol?

Hi, I don’t take seizure medication ( my daughter does) but Sudafed – alone – does that same thing to me.  Some cough syrups and cold remedies do too. I guess some individuals are just more sensitive to it.   Michelle

Response:

I have taken some cough syrups at nigth and i had 4 petite seizures so, with alot of these over the counter drugs you have to be careful
