TENUATE after phentermine fizzles?

Well this is my first week,,and i couldnt be happier with tenuate,,i would take tenuate over phentermine ANYDAY:)

I have used phentermine for five months to lose 55 lbs.There is no doubt I have developed a tolerence for the drug. My doctor has suggested that I try Tenuate. I know nothing about Tenuate and have seen very little discussion of it in this group so I assume it is not widley prescribed. Does anyone have any experience with it? I would appreciate any advice?
There isn’t any way to know if Tenuate will work for you without trying it. Tenuate is a dopamine/norepinephrine agonist like phentermine. The action isn’t as long, I think around 8 hours opposed to 12 for phentermine. Most patients respond better to phentermine than tenuate, but if you are developing a tolerance to phentermine, this is a moot point with you. In a study comparing phentermine resin 30 mg (Ionamin) with diethylpropion 75 mg (Tenuate Dospan), patients taking phentermine lost significantly more weight (18.20 lbs vs 13.84 lbs). Valle-Jones JC, et al. A comparative study of phentermine and diethylpropioin in the treatment of obese patients in general practics. Pharmatherapeutica 1983;3(5):300-304. I’ve been meaning to write a monograph on tenuate, but with other news haven’t gotten around to it. Bottom line is even if Tenuate doesn’t work as well, it may at least work. And it’s always possible that your phentermine tolerance will subside in the meantime, allowing you to take it again. I know i wont increase it:) starting tommorow i am gonna cut my 75mgs in half!! its very strong,, not sure if i will sleep tonite, this is my first day on it…will let ya know. but i havent been able to eat today. i did manage to eat a tuna sandwich..but at supper i couldnt eat a bite and i know thats not good.

Not legally. My friend’s cousin is doing super on it and her doc said she can stay on it forever. But she is wound up like a top – does not stop talking, since she is on it.
Sounds to me like she’s on too high a dose. Is this obvious to her doctor? How long is tenuate around? Are there any dangers pointing to problems with it ?
It’s been around for more than 30 years. The danger is the danger of any amphetamine-like stimulant (which for most people means a relatively low danger, though some people can have undesirable side effects such as insomnia or will attempt to continually increase the dose. Excessive doses of any drug in this class taken chronically can cause a syndrome indistinguishable from paranoid psychosis.) But you wouldn’t expect to see this in someone taking 75mg/day under medical supervision for weight loss. — Steve Dyer

rocco I have used both phentermine (as duramine here in australia) and tenuate – I’m not a medical person – but I found that it was similar in effect (probably not as strong). whereas with duramine I found I could go all day without eating (not recommended – but then what did my GP know?) – with tenuate I definitely had hunger pangs (when I starved – so d’uh!) 55 lbs in 5 months is huge weightloss – why don’t you think about going off the meds and maintaining for a while – then maybe after a couple of months getting used to your new WOE – you might find that the phentermine works again? good luck honey bye Joy 90/75/68 kgs!
