time zones & sleep?

Question:

This is very strange –I’ve had insomnia all my life, since I was about 2 years old –really– It had always taken a couple hours each night to fall asleep, sometimes, I wouldn’t sleep at all, and sometimes, it would take 5-6 hours to fall asleep. It always tormented me growing up: in school, as I’d fall asleep constantly, from Kindergarten through college, and even now at work, as embarassing as it may be. I’ve lived in California all my life, and I had never travelled out of the state. Just a couple weeks ago, I flew to New York on business, and immediately, my sleep troubles became as bad as they could ever be. I didn’t fall asleep at all the 1st couple nights I was there, and I was an absolute wreck all day every day, probably because of the time-zone difference (my conference started at 8:am each day, and it felt like 5:am). Now, the funny thing is: as soon as I got back to CA, I started sleeping like a baby, not taking more than 10-15 minutes per night to fall asleep, and sleeping very well, without awakening a few times in the middle of the night, like I used to. And I’m not exhausted all day, like I always was. (People certainly know me as being extremely lethargic, with a few bursts of energy throughout the day) Now, my energy level is pretty even throughout the day. I’ve never slept so well in my entire life, and I’m wondering if it has something to do with being jolted into a different time zone, having my circadian clock forced the "wrong" way (or just a bad way!), and then coming back to my "normal" time zone. I don’t know why this could be –it’s all very strange… But I love it! I hope it stays this way for good! Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Me again. Back to the insomnia already. The good sleep I was talking about, no –the best sleep of my life– lasted less than a couple weeks. Maybe the time zone thing had something to do with sleeping so well, and now, it’s all back to normal, i.e.  misery…!
