I wish I could give you a clear cut answer, but there isn’t one.  The insomnia might go away, get marginally better or persist.  Mine persisted and I take a Benedryl pill (over the counter allergy med) and .5 to .75 mg of Alprazolam when I wake up in the middle of every night.  My doc and I discussed this before I started doing it. If your insomnia doesn’t go away, consider talking to your doc about how to work around it.  Still, though, in your case it would probably be best to try taking the Paxil in the morning (IMO) before jumping into sleep aids.

Hey Doug, I talked about this problem with my doc and he told me the same thing, take a benedryl. Another thing he suggested was to take the meds in the morning. thank you pam, and I am gonna try to do the morning thing with it.  I get told side effects and I never pay attention b/c i’ve never once in my life had a side effect from anything.  I wish I had paid more attention when he started to talk about them.  I just hope things even out before finals. marie

Hey Marie, Go to the Internet Mental Health site and you’ll find out all you might ever want to know about meds.  I don’t have the url at the moment because I somehow lost all my bookmarks in my Opera browser.

Response:

Hey everyone, I started paxil today.  I was started on the low dose of 10mg to be worked up to something like 50 or so (I think that is what he said anyway). I only took 1 10mg tablet about 6pm this evening and I’ve not been able to sleep.  Now I thought paxil was a slowacting type thing so do you think my insomnia is being caused by the paxil.  I even took my rx sleeping medicine which usu. zonks me right out and it didn’t do a darned thing.  I just find it hard to believe paxil would be affecting me like this so soon after taking it. Maybe it’s just stress. marie

Response:

yeah Marie, It’s supposed to be slow to build up and start working. The side effects usually come on quicker than the good effects, and One common one is to experience increased anxiety for a while. There was a member here that said it started to kick in for SP after just 3 days and then there’s been other posters that have said it didn’t kick in for months. If the insomnia keeps up, see your doc again and he may be able to find something that will work in better with Paxil until your body adapts to the med. I had a problem like that with Nardil, and eventually the insomnia went away. Maybe you could take xanax or some other sleep medicine. If you can’t fall asleep again, you may have to try a different medication.   >Hey everyone, I started paxil today.  I was started on the low dose of 10mg >to >be worked up to something like 50 or so (I think that is what he said >anyway). >I only took 1 10mg tablet about 6pm this evening and I’ve not been able to >sleep.  Now I thought paxil was a slowacting type thing so do you think my >insomnia is being caused by the paxil.  I even took my rx sleeping medicine >which usu. zonks me right out and it didn’t do a darned thing.  I just find >it >hard to believe paxil would be affecting me like this so soon after taking >it. >Maybe it’s just stress. >marie

Marie. I’ve read that it’s best to start Paxil at 5 Mg (you can get a pill cutter), then the next week go to 10 Mg, then 15 MG, and then 20 Mg which is the recommended therapeutic dosage. You should only find it necessary to go beyond 20 Mg if after a while it doesn’t work well enough. Going up in small weekly steps reduces any possible side effects. Regards. Marie, Insomnia is a common side effect of Paxil although some people experience just the opposite – sleepiness.  I previously took Paxil for almost 2 years and am now on Celexa (very similar).  I took / take this type of drug in the morning so I have a little bit better chance of sleeping at night.  That’s also what my MD recommends.

Hey Snerfle,   I have heard of others experiencing insomnia with Paxil. Interestingly I just started on 10 mg Paxil two days ago.  My doctor told me to take it at night because it would probably make me tired.  I have slept well the past two nights.  If it is affecting you, then maybe start taking it in the morning to see if that helps.  Maybe the prescription sleeping medicine is causing a strange interaction with the Paxil (just a thought). Do you know how long this side effect should persist? Marie

Hang in there marie, it takes a few weeks to adjust.  I just went through some adjustments after starting Celexa, and had to adjust doseage and the time of day I was taking it.  At first I had to take it at night, because it made me so sleepy, now I need to take it during the morning, because if I don’t I will be up all night also.   Good Luck with it, I think you recieved all sensible answers to your problem Pam
