Valerian Root?

I presently get by with sleep problems with 0.125 mg of Klonopin for restless leg syndrome. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with Valerian Root as a sleep aid? I know you don’t mix it with other med’s. Does it work long term? Do you build a tolerance? Any side effects? The stuff smells horrible, does it make your body or breath smell like that?

I have used valerian in the past and have used it in a combination herbal formula and in homeopathic preparations.  It is pretty effective.  It is the plant from which valium and related drugs are synthysized or maybe they’ve now found a synthetic way to produce valium (not a doctor or pharmacist).  Anyway, I found that I sometimes had a hangover effect from valerian but nowhere near the problems of pharmaceutical drug hangovers. I’m pretty sensitive to anything like this so I might not be the best judge.  I used valerian more for its calming effect on nerves and anxiety/panic.  So much of that has almost disappeared since I’ve been on cpap.  I think the lack of sleep just made me a little crazy! What I did find when I used valerian in a tincture was that it had a very distinct smell/taste and that somehow it didn’t bother me if I needed it (panic/anxiety) but if I was okay and continued using it, it was less tolerable to the taste.  Dunno if that makes any sense but that’s the anecdotal account from me! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Marty wrote: > I presently get by with sleep problems with 0.125 mg of Klonopin for > restless leg syndrome. A doctor suggested valerian root tea. I’ve tried it and it’s very effective.sometimes I can find it mixed with peppermint which really helps the taste but I think it’s slightly less effective and I have to make the tea pretty strong. I seem to have to make it strong anyway as I am not exactly a petite person. I’ve only been using it for about a month in conjuntion with prescribed meds, and I do notice a bit of a mild hangover in the morning, but compared to sleep deprivation it,s a definate bonus. Have’nt noticed any tolerance yet. If  I use the non mint tea I put in a liquid peppermint extract, which kills the bad taste.I must say it is very strong for an over the counter remedy. — Rob McGee "Marty" <case…@earthlink.net> wrote in message

I have used Valerian Root tea as a sleep aid when I was fighting insomnia. The stuff really stinks (literally) but does help in making me sleepy.  I went to a health food coop and bought it bulk. You need to get a Tupperware (or something like it) container so it doesn’t stink up the house.  The biggest drawback was my family hated the smell.  I didn’t find it tasted all that bad.  There’s another herb Passion Flower? that can be used with it. Both of these herbs are sedatives and I think have muscle relaxing properties to them. I found that the valerian would help to fall asleep but wouldn’t keep me asleep.  It lasts about 2-3 hours.  This is fine for people needing help falling asleep but may not help people that need something that will help them get a sustained sleep.
