why is it always 4 a.m.? (semi OT)
Question:
Hi all, It is me, or do the people who have insomnia always seem to wake up at 4 a.m.?! Although I am sleeping very well now (even if it is on top of my briefcase and laptop because my soon to be ex anal husband keeps taking all my stuff) when I did awake, it was always around this time. Kathi

Hi Kathi, How very strange. I have always woken up between 4 and 5 am. I’ve suffered from insomnia since I was a teenager. At least I don’t wake up every hour like I used to. I usually tend to get 4 or 5 hours before the insomnia sets in. Take Care, Debby

I also wake up around 4:00. I think it has something to do with sleep cycle. I think we may be moving from one sleep cycle to the next when we awaken. I don’t know much about it other than that.

If I only wake up once, it’s usually around 5 or 6. However, my sleep has been very fragmented lately, and no doubt some of the awakenings have occurred at 4! -elizabeth

I don’t know Kathi, but thats the time most shift workers have accidents and apparently when most people die (sorry). All part of the bio-rhythms I guess. Ian

Kathi. With me, it’s 3:00AM, plus or minus 10 minutes; then every hour or so until iI get up. ( I take a time release melatonin before going to bed and sleep well until 3:00. I discussed this with my shrink and his answer was that it’s probably not related to the panic or anxiety and therefore has a good chance of not going away as we reduce the anxiety. He thinks it may be generational; and it certainly is, at least in my family. My mother does the same thing as does at least one of my sons. I am on Klonopin, which has an efficacy that should last through the night easily, but if you’re on Xanax or Ativan, you might get a wearing off that interrupts sleep after 5 or 6 hours. Gordon
