Ya see i have a really good friend that has been on Xanax for probably almost a year now. Suddenly, last week she had a Grand Mal seizure and they immediately took her off of the Xanax, and put her on an Anti-convulsant(Dilantin). The problem is that she seems to be very depressed, cranky, moody, and just immpossible to get along with. She knows that she is being very moody–but she cant seem to help herself–she feels like shes not in control of her emotions–for example–shell go from extremely happy to downright pissed off for no apparent reason–and then after a few minutes of yelling and ranting she will calm down and realize that shes just overexagerating. The thing is even though she knows theres nothing to get mad about she still has done it to me about three times in the last week–and im really worried about her. I’ve heard that their can be some serious withdrawal symptoms if someone was to suddenly stop her dosage of Xanax. Is this true, and if so are the mood swings that i described above part of that withdrawal. How long does this withdrawal last normally–i mean she will get over it wont she—any one out there who has experienced this or just happens to know what might be going on please e-mail me or just post it here in the newsgroup. Any info that you can give me will greatly help me out, and will be appreciated to the nth degree. Thanks again!!!! Sincerely, Nick Hi Nick, Yes, it’s true that abrupt cessation of Xanax can cause withdrawal symptoms as well as seizures. Had your friend reduced her dosage drastically before she had the seizure? Or is she on any other meds? (I ask this because last year, I had 2 seizures within 2 months and they were attributed to toxic levels of another med in my system.) According to Dr. William Kernodle (PD: The Medical Point of View), the most common symptoms of benzo withdrawal are anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, agitation, irritability, and muscle tension. Less frequent symptoms are nausea, sweating, lethargy, hyperacusis (a heightened ability to hear), aches and pains, blurred vision, depression, nightmares, hyperflexia (increased reflexes), and incoordination or imbalance. Dr. Kernodle says that the withdrawal symptoms peak during the first drug free week and gradually diminish over two weeks (or occasionally much longer). IMO, if she is still experiencing all these symptoms after a few weeks at the same intensity, she should probably check with her doctor– she might need an antidepressant. I hope this helps your friend. BTW, she’s very lucky to have a friend like you who is so concerned about her. Hi Nick, I agree with Sondra. I was experiencing very much the same symptoms as your friend. I was irritated very easily and I seemed to be picking fights and causing trouble even though I knew I was doing it. I would fly off the handle over the smallest things. I was put on an anti depressant and that has started to come under controll again. Have her see her doctor and tell him about her symptoms she may very well be depressed and an antidepressant just might help her. Good luck:) Karen W.
