Your experience — How long can we put off dialysis?

Question:

soon to be posted the following article in the Peritoneal Forum http://brumley.com/renal/pdboard.html Dated  : March 27, 192000 at 12:07:06 Subject: Re: Your experience — How long can we put off dialysis? http://brumley.com/renal/pdmessages/1780.html The biggest danger is talking to too many doctors, none of whom you trust and who sound like idiots. DON’T go on temporary hemo now as you might ruin the blood vessels that go to your heart, as you might need them later. If you want PD, You should have the catheter placed about a month before it is anticipated that you need to be dialyzed. Don’t wait till you are sick. It is easier to prevent being sick than to recover from being sick.  Earlier is better than later. Good luck

It is best to have the PD cathter placed a month prior to starting PD to allow the catheter to heal well and avoid temporary hemodialysis. Your father probably didn’t become sick over night and has forgotten how it is to feel good.  Discuss your concerns with your nephrologist and ask to meet the PD staff.
